Pumice is one of the key ingredients in PON because it helps create a healthy root environment without breaking down over time. Here are the biggest benefits for indoor plants:
* 🪨 Excellent aeration: Pumice has thousands of tiny air pockets that keep oxygen flowing to the roots. Healthy roots need oxygen just as much as they need water.
* 💧 Balances moisture: Unlike soil, pumice absorbs a small amount of water and slowly releases it back to the roots. This helps prevent roots from drying out too quickly while avoiding overly wet conditions.
* 🌱 Encourages stronger roots: The combination of air and consistent moisture encourages thicker, healthier root systems that are less prone to rot.
* 🚫 Reduces root rot risk: Because pumice drains well and doesn’t stay soggy, excess water moves away from the roots more easily, reducing the chance of root rot.

In a PON mix, pumice works alongside lava rock and zeolite, with each serving a different purpose:
