๐ŸŒฟ Crimson Floor โ€” A Closed Woodland Terrarium
Some builds announce themselves. This one just spreads out and takes over.

A rex begonia claims the elevated ground, deep crimson leaves reaching across the floor like it was always supposed to be there. Spiderwood holds its position behind it. White polka dot plants find their light at the edges. Dragon's tongue settles low between them, quiet and patient.

Moss covers what's left. Dark stones mark a place that feels found rather than placed.

Built in a thrifted hexagonal vessel with a brushed steel lid. Substrate inoculated with bioactive soil โ€” because what lives beneath the surface matters as much as what grows above it.

One of a kind. Handcrafted. Living art.

๐ŸŒฟ Spring is waking up behind the house.

The creek corridor behind our property is one of our favorite places this time of year. The moss is greening up, the wild allium is pushing through the leaf litter, and the flat shale on the bank is just sitting there waiting to end up in a build.

This is where Quiet & Rooted starts. Not at a greenhouse, not from a catalog โ€” from here. Boots in the mud, eyes on the ground, taking in what the land is already offering.

We forage carefully and intentionally. A little moss here, a stone there โ€” never enough to disturb what makes this place worth coming back to. The goal is inspiration as much as materials. If we strip it bare it stops being the thing that makes the builds worth making.

Ohio spring doesn't waste any time once it gets going. Neither do we.

๐ŸŒฟ Murk โ€” Week One.
Seven days ago we scooped creek water, bank sediment, and flat shale stones from the creek behind our property and sealed it in a jar. No plants selected. No design decisions. Just whatever was living in that creek bank, sealed in glass.
This is what one week looks like.
The water is clearing. The sediment has settled into its own landscape. And Murk is not as alone as we thought โ€” Grit the snail showed up on day two, and something else has been swimming through the water column ever since.
We still don't know what Murk becomes. That's still the whole point.
Week two starts now.

๐ŸŒฟ Meet the residents of Murk.

Yesterday we introduced Murk โ€” a sealed creek ecosystem scooped straight from the backyard creek. Creek water, bank sediment, flat shale stones. Unknown biology. Sealed and left to evolve.

We didn't expect company so soon.

24 hours in, Grit appeared on the glass. A tiny freshwater snail that hitched a ride in the sediment and showed up to work on day two. Unbothered by the chaos. Already cleaning the glass like he owns the place.

Murk is the monster jar of wonder. Grit is its keeper.
We have no idea what comes next. That's the whole point.

๐ŸŒฟ Introducing Murk โ€” A Sealed Creek Ecosystem
Yesterday I walked to the creek behind my house, scooped creek water, bank sediment, and flat shale stones straight from the source โ€” and sealed it all in a jar.
No plants selected. No hardscape arranged. No design decisions. Just whatever was living in that creek bank, sealed in glass and left to its own devices.
24 hours later the water is already clearing. And there are things swimming in it.
This isn't a terrarium. It's a captured moment. We have no idea what Murk becomes โ€” and that's exactly the point.
Follow along.

๐ŸŒฟ Fern Rise โ€” An Open Woodland Terrarium

A single piece of spiderwood rises from a moss floor, reaching toward a canopy it grew itself.

Built in a wide mouth hurricane vase with a hidden water feature nestled at its base โ€” a still pool beneath the fern, quiet and out of sight until you look closer.

Two millipedes found their way in through the moss. They stayed. We let them.

Handcrafted. One of a kind. Living art โ€” because the best builds have a life of their own before they're finished.

Hollow Ground โ€” A Living Earth Terrarium
This one wasn't built. It was gathered.
On a Saturday morning in early March we walked our yard with a container and collected whatever was there. Soil from the mulch beds where mushrooms were already fruiting. Moss pulled from the pavers. Stones that had been sitting undisturbed under the deck for years. Leaf litter. Bark. And whatever organisms โ€” pill bugs, worms, things that move in the dark โ€” were already living in all of it.
We sealed it in glass and called it done.
Inside right now there is a living fungal network threading through the soil. There are volunteer plants that chose themselves. There are mushroom caps that were already forming before the lid went on. There is a community of organisms continuing their cycle in a sealed world.
We didn't design this ecosystem. We just gave it a window.
One of a kind. Unrepeatable. From one specific yard on one specific morning. This is Quiet & Rooted at its most honest.

Grateful for todayโ€™s Plant Life Pop-Up at The Common Ground.
Thank you to everyone who stopped, asked questions, shared stories, and brought a little Quiet & Rooted piece home with them. Watching these living builds find new spaces is one of the best parts of doing this.
A few of todayโ€™s terrariums have already started their next chapter elsewhere. The rest will keep growing here, quietly becoming themselves.
More builds in the works. More small worlds to come. ๐ŸŒฟ

Each terrarium is built as a quiet landscape โ€” layered with moss, stone, soil, and living plants that continue to change long after they leave my hands. Some are experiments. Some are gentle forest scenes. All of them are meant to grow into their own stories over time.
Grateful for days like this โ€” for conversations, curiosity, and the simple joy of sharing tiny, living places with people. ๐ŸŒฟ

Quiet & Rooted will be at Plant Life Pop-Up this Saturday at The Common Ground in Medina.
Weโ€™ll be bringing a small collection of sealed terrarium buildsโ€”each one designed as its own tiny environment, meant to change and mature over time.
If youโ€™re into plants, tiny worlds, and living pieces that evolve with their space, come wander the tables and see these in person.

The First Soil Sleeps

Beneath layers of bark, leaf, and moss, a quiet world begins.

Gathered from the garden floor โ€” rain-touched, teeming with hidden life โ€” this seeded soil will become the foundation for future builds. Itโ€™s not decoration; itโ€™s the heartbeat of everything that grows at Quiet & Rooted.

The next chapter starts here โ€” one breath, one spore, one unseen spark at a time. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

Thank you to everyone who wandered through our little living worlds today at Whimsy in the Warehouse โœจ

Itโ€™s always special to see people pause, breathe, and connect with these quiet growing landscapes.

Grateful for every conversation, every spark of curiosity, and every person who brought home a piece of nature to nurture ๐ŸŒฑ

Until the next gathering โ€” stay rooted, stay curious.
