We also do lanscape isntallation as well, and if you decide to have us do any work, that 40$ will be deducted from your bill. Scale is always very important when designing a landscape for a house. Just as important as properly scaling furniture inside the house. Nothing I hate more than a HUGE tract house with tiny little buttons all in a row in front like little soldiers, or no larger trees planted so the home just looks like it's a big box rising out of a cow pasture. This is one of my favorite designs that I installed 12 years ago, and IMO is PERFECT as far as scale and size to the home.

Right now, Wisteria is in bloom in many places, some just finishing, others just starting. There are two main types that are sold in local garden centers, Japanese Wisteria (Wisteria Florabunda), and Kentucky Wisteria (Wisteria Frutescens) Wisteria is a very LARGE vine, and is only appropriate for a large structure, such as a pergola, or sturdy arbor.. or like I have in my yard... growing up a tree. I just replaced one this week that was unfortunately mislabeled at the garden center when I bought it. I was wondering what was taking it so long to grow up the pergola, and turns out it was slower growing "Amethyst falls" Kentucky Wisteria , and not the "Texas Purple" Japanese Wisteria that I thought I purchased. Last summer I thought "Oh well, too late to fix it now, so I'll just live with it"... it's not like it isn't a pretty vine, just not what I wanted. This spring that 16 degree weather killed it back to the ground, so I thought, rip it out and get the one I REALLY want. So I did just that. And because I purchased it in may, and not July like before, I was able to be sure it was the right variety. It's also faster growing, so I have high hopes for my new vine. In these pictures, you can see the difference between the 2 types, the first pic is Japanese wisteria, and the second is the "Amethyst falls" Kentucky wisteria. The Japanese Wisteria is getting harder and harder to find locally, only Suburban had it, no other garden center in the city carried it, which is sad, because it is the "classic" wisteria that everyone thinks of.

Late April and early May is when we see azaleas all in glorious bloom around town. But beware of the new "encore" azaleas being marketed at many garden centers and home improvement stores. While yes, they do bloom in the spring and fall.. their winter hardiness is VERY lacking in our area, a few of the better nurseries have discovered this and stopped carrying them. Also keep in mind that those azaleas don't actually bloom any MORE than a traditional azalea, the bloom is just more sporadic and spread out between the spring and fall, never making a SPECTACULAR show that azaleas have traditionally been known for. Here is a perfect example. The first time I tried an encore azalea at a customer's home, I sited them well, prepared the soil perfectly, and ALL 5 died before the winter was even half over. Popped out the dead ones, and replaced them with the tried and true variety "Girard's Crimson" (In the exact same planting holes) and here they are performing to perfection. (along with a stunning border of creeping phlox)
