There’s a little part of me that loves these snowstorms. I get to sit inside looking out my windows and dreaming of next year’s garden. I look through my photos to better remember last year’s garden. And I sift through my catalogs and books, making a wishlist. As I look back on last summer’s garden, I make notes of what I loved the most. The past two summers, the highlight of my garden has been the visiting butterflies and pollinators. I start noticing visiting swallowtails in mid spring. They love my fennel as a host plant, and we get a lot of swallowtail caterpillars. They also are sure to love my golden alexanders I planted last year. It’s a beautiful little native perennial with yellow flowers in early spring. I hope to have some available to sell this spring. I am planning to buy a spicebush, which is a 12’ tall shrub that likes partial sun. They are host to the spicebush swallowtail and the tiger swallowtail. Look for my next blog about monarchs.

This is the first image ever captured of a solar system with more than one planet orbiting a star other than our Sun.

That glowing ring in the middle? That’s a young star called TYC 8998-760-1, about 300 light-years from Earth. And those dots around it? Two giant exoplanets.

We’re not just guessing they’re there we can actually see them.

This is what looking into the past looks like. Because the light captured in this image left that star when the U.S. was still using horse drawn carriages.

Space is wild.

Three of five swallowtail cats on our fennel. Fennel is one of the few non-native plants we will always keep, because we love the swallowtails.
