Now is also a time to do some serious lawn maintenance. Clip your lawn down to at least 1 inch, aerreate or plug your lawn to allow for good drainage and air during the winter and spring rains, top dress your lawns with sand and compost, reseed for a thicker and fuller lawn (reseeding helps the health of the lawn, thickens the lawn and prevents w**ds, also at this time of the year, you don't have to water as much, making seedlings establishment much easier, and cheaper on the water bill.) Fall planted lawns are much stronger and have much better root structure than a spring planted lawn, although, you should reseed in the spring to allow for quick filling of any thin spots in the lawn. Use fertilizers that allow for good root growth, high phosphorus, and potassium along with some lime build good roots. Do not use high nitrogen fertilizers from the spring, they encourage heavy blade growth and make for shallow roots and thatch. And remember, you get what you pay for in grass seed, cheap seed has higher quantities of w**d seed and inert material (fiberglass, paper, etc...). And pick a grass seed that has been cultivated for your area, and the right amount of sun and shade. FYI, I prefer pennington grasses and my favorite type of seed is Old Orchard Grass Seed (Used on golf courses of course!).
