🚧 TRENCH TUESDAY: Downspout Drainage Done Right 💧
If your gutters are dumping water next to your foundation… we need to talk 😏
A proper trench isn’t just a hole in the ground — it’s the difference between a dry basement and a very expensive problem.
Here’s how it should actually be done:
📏 1. Plan Your Exit Water needs somewhere to go. Always direct it away from the house — pop-up emitters, daylight drains, or a designated runoff area.
📐 2. Slope Is Everything Your trench should slope at least 1 inch for every 10 feet. No slope = standing water = clogged pipe = future headache.
🪏 3. Dig Smart, Not Lazy Trench depth should typically be 8–12 inches deep and wide enough to comfortably fit your drain tile.
🧱 4. Build a Proper Base Add a layer of gravel at the bottom to promote drainage and protect the pipe.
🌀 5. Use the Right Pipe Solid pipe for moving water away, perforated pipe only if you’re collecting groundwater (yes, it matters more than you think).
🧻 6. Wrap It Up Landscape fabric helps prevent dirt from clogging your system over time — skip this and you’ll regret it later.
🏁 7. Backfill the Right Way Gravel around the pipe, then soil on top. Compact lightly to prevent sinking.
