FREEZE. THAW. REPEAT.
The late-winter temperature cycle puts real stress on trees in the Omaha area.
Here’s what happens:
When daytime temps rise and evening temps drop below freezing, moisture inside branches expands and contracts. Over time, that can create small structural cracks, weaken branch attachments, and make brittle limbs more prone to failure — especially once spring growth and storms arrive.
You may not notice damage immediately.
That’s why late winter is one of the best times to inspect and prune:
• Trees are still dormant
• Structural issues are easier to see
• Pests and diseases are less active
• Proper pruning now promotes stronger spring growth
A proactive inspection now can reduce risk before storm season begins.
