How to do the viral faux lime wash. Details below! 👇🏼

- Get two narrow paint roller trays and overlap them. Use painters tape to tape them together. I taped it underneath too just to keep it sturdy.
- Buy two colors of paint in the same tone, preferably a shade lighter and a shade darker. In person the two colors looked almost the same when wet, but it is more noticeable once dry. We used Sherwin-Williams Alabaster and Skyline Steel. Must be a matte sheen!
- Use a wide paintbrush. We used a 4 inch brush. Dip the brush in both colors at the same time.
- Make paint strokes in an X shape
- Remember that it’s not supposed to be perfect…that’s the whole point!

If you hate wallpaper, this is a perfect alternative!

Open ceilings are popular in basement remodels, but there’s one detail most homeowners don’t think about.

When drywall stops below the joists, it can create a small ledge that collects dust for years. In an older basement with low ceilings, every inch matters, so instead of closing everything in, we’re using a more detailed drywall approach to keep the open ceiling look while avoiding that dust trap.

It takes more time. It takes more bead. It adds a few days.

But it creates a cleaner, better-looking basement in the long run.

That’s the difference between just finishing a basement and thinking through how the space will actually live years from now.

Everyone notices the finishes.

But what happens underneath the home matters even more.

Shoe molding is common, but that doesn’t always mean it’s the best look.

Whenever possible, we try to create a clean, flat flooring surface so the baseboards can sit tight without extra trim. It’s a small detail, but it makes the finished space feel cleaner, more modern, and more intentional.

The Two Things That Determine How Long Your Cabinets Actually Last…

Everyone obsesses over door style and finish color.

Meanwhile the two things that actually determine whether your cabinets last 10 years or 30 are hiding inside the box where you can’t see them.

The first is box material. Plywood is the standard for a reason…its cross-layered construction holds screws, resists moisture, and maintains structural integrity under daily use. MDF and particle board look identical from the outside but fail faster, especially near water. When you’re shopping, pull open a cabinet and look at the exposed edge inside. Plywood shows distinct wood layers. Particle board looks uniform with visible chips throughout. That edge tells you everything.

The second is joinery…specifically how the drawer boxes are built and how the box itself is assembled. The most common failure point in lower-tier cabinets isn’t the wood, it’s the fasteners. Cam locks work free over thousands of open-and-close cycles. Dovetail drawer construction and pocket-screw-plus-glue assembly hold. Ask your cabinet rep how the drawers are built before you commit to anything.

A cabinet can look stunning on day one regardless of what’s inside it. The box material and joinery tell you what it looks like on day 3,650.
