Mister Ezra
Mister Ezra hops his wooden legs
With a rope tied around his waist
For food and shelter
He wears a metal sheet
Wrapped around tunic
For pennies a pound
With a smile and big heart
Red beans and cornbread
Simmer and bake in his humble home
Offering neighbors a bowl as they pass by
I think on Mr Ezra some days
At 6, too young to understand
Life lessons passed on
To the man I am today
Written for my friend Robert Brasher, who shared an inspiring and heartfelt story about Mr. Ezra, an elderly paraplegic man who collected metal to put food on his table. He would tie metal sheets around his torso that he would drag to sell. He would cook up red beans and cornbread and share with neighbors.
