Why You Should Always Stain Both Sides of a Fence:
We get this question all the time:
“Can you just stain my side? My neighbor doesn’t want theirs done.”
It’s a fair question, but only staining one side can actually cause long-term damage to the fence.
Here’s why:
1️⃣ Uneven Moisture Absorption
When one side repels water and the other absorbs it, the boards expand and contract unevenly. Over time, this leads to warping, cupping, and bowing.. especially in direct sun.
2️⃣ Accelerated Decay
Moisture trapped inside unstained wood creates the perfect environment for rot, mildew, and mold. Once that process starts, it’s hard to stop.
3️⃣ Weakened Structure
As the wood breaks down unevenly, you’ll start to see cracks, splits, and soft spots. That not only affects appearance but also the fence’s overall integrity.
4️⃣ Aesthetics & Neighbor Impact
Even if only your side is stained, some stain will bleed through the cracks.. leaving the other side looking patchy and uneven. It also fades at a much faster rate.
👉 Bottom line: If you’re going to stain, stain both sides. Doing just one side can do more harm than good, and shorten the life of your investment.
