Why You Should Always Stain Both Sides of a Fence:

We get this question all the time:
“Can you just stain my side? My neighbor doesn’t want theirs done.”
It’s a fair question, but only staining one side can actually cause long-term damage to the fence.

Here’s why:

1️⃣ Uneven Moisture Absorption
When one side repels water and the other absorbs it, the boards expand and contract unevenly. Over time, this leads to warping, cupping, and bowing.. especially in direct sun.

2️⃣ Accelerated Decay
Moisture trapped inside unstained wood creates the perfect environment for rot, mildew, and mold. Once that process starts, it’s hard to stop.

3️⃣ Weakened Structure
As the wood breaks down unevenly, you’ll start to see cracks, splits, and soft spots. That not only affects appearance but also the fence’s overall integrity.

4️⃣ Aesthetics & Neighbor Impact
Even if only your side is stained, some stain will bleed through the cracks.. leaving the other side looking patchy and uneven. It also fades at a much faster rate.

👉 Bottom line: If you’re going to stain, stain both sides. Doing just one side can do more harm than good, and shorten the life of your investment.

How to keep this from happening to your fence this winter (for cheap.)

The snow and freezing conditions are coming wether we like it or not. (I personally do not.) The unforgiving Oklahoma winter storms dont really care if you had the time or the extra finances to replace your fence this year…. They will destroy it all the same.

So, here’s what I recommend to keep your fence standing without paying someone like me.

If your fence is on its last leg:

1. Count how many posts you have.
2. Go buy that many T posts and bailing wire.
3. Drive the T posts next to the wood posts.
4. Attach the T posts with the bailing wire.
5. Thank me in the spring.

It’s so important that you secure EVERY post. Because you don’t know which one is going to go. And in the winter. When one goes, more are quick to follow. You are trying to prevent the first domino from falling.

This approach won’t stop the posts from breaking. However, it will keep the fence from falling.

Hope this helps!

Every industry has outsiders looking in that assume it’s easy.

When we get told “it’s just a fence, how hard can that be to build?”

This is what we imagine those individuals think we do all day. 😂😂😂
