Before H3K, there was a house on McCarn. 🌴

Twenty years ago, Howard and Kevin finished a renovation that made them fall in love with Palm Springs, Midcentury Modern design, and an idea that would become H3K Home + Design.

When the house sold in August 2006, it had quietly become a show house for their work — drawing people who loved what they'd created and wanted help with projects of their own.

And just like that, H3K was born.

Our style has evolved a lot since then (these days, Howard doesn't have to personally demo every kitchen 😏), but we'll always have a soft spot for the house where it all started.

Here's to 20 years of H3K, and everything still ahead. 🥂🌴

“La Orange” has quite the Palm Springs comeback story… 🧡

The 1960 Clair Earl-designed home in Twin Palms had fallen into serious disrepair before H3K Design owners Howard Hawkes and Kevin Kemper took on an 18-month restoration, bringing the property back to life and transforming it into a Modernism Week showcase home.

For the interiors, H3K’s Travis Smith worked closely with the homeowner to create something that felt true to the era without turning the house into a museum. Vintage ’50s and ’60s finds mix with bold color, playful patterns, atomic-inspired details and plenty of Palm Springs personality. From filling the original floor-to-ceiling built-ins to the turquoise, orange and gold living spaces and Brian Wolbaum’s wonderfully kitschy media room mural, every room gets to have a little fun.

The result? A home that celebrates great midcentury architecture while remembering one very important thing: design should be fun.
