This Project was a good old fashioned to-do list for our client out in Fort Calhoun. we had replaced the kitchen faucet, cut out and recalked the kitchen backsplash and bathtub. Replaced the bathtub drain, installed a fixed curved shower rod one of the bathrooms, hung a display cabinet, adjusted and trimmed down a barn door that was getting caught on the floor guide, replaced a worn drawer glide and installed a new trash can drawer unit all for $1,700. Repair or Replace?

Most people jump straight to: “I guess I need a new one.”

But in reality, almost everything follows the same path:

✔ Maintain it
✔ Repair it
✔ Restore it
✘ Replace it

A chipped tile doesn’t always need replacement. A scratched cabinet doesn’t always need new doors. A squeaky hinge doesn’t need a new door. The same idea applies to vehicles, tools, furniture, and even homes as a whole.

Small issues ignored become big issues. But catching things early can often turn a major project into a simple repair.

Knowing when to repair and when replacement truly makes sense can save a lot of money over time.

Good repairs aren’t about hiding problems—they’re about extending the life of what you already own.

Whether it’s a chipped tile, damaged trim, worn hardware, or a larger project, the right repair at the right time can often prevent a much bigger expense later.

That mindset is a big part of how we approach projects at Homeward Handyman Services.

Everything you own needs maintenance.

Your house, your vehicle, your appliances, your deck, your roof, your furnace — none of it stays in good condition by accident.

A good rule of thumb for home maintenance is to set aside about 1–2% of your home’s value per year for repairs and upkeep.
For example:
A $200,000 home should probably have $2,000–$4,000 per year set aside for maintenance.

That doesn’t mean you’ll spend that exact amount every year. Some years may be light. Other years, you may need a water heater, deck repairs, drywall repairs, exterior caulking, paint touch-ups, or appliance work.

This is also different from an emergency fund.
An emergency fund is for unexpected life events.
A home maintenance fund is for the predictable reality that homes wear out over time.

Keeping a maintenance budget helps you stay ahead of small problems before they become expensive ones.

Homeward Handyman Services helps homeowners stay ahead of those small repairs, maintenance items, and cosmetic updates before they turn into larger projects. Remember estimates every Wednesday 402.915.0824

This walnut theater is now complete! We went from picking up the raw lumber from Big Red Sawmill, rough milling in the shop, converting a spare room on site into a micro shop to cut everything down to their final dimensions, and even clear coated as a full-size spray booth. Once these slats were finished, we took everything down to the basement theater and got right to work on switching and extending boxes to black. We removed the existing baseboard; skim coated the lower portion of the walls and painted to have a consistent background behind the slats. Once everything was installed, we added a new base shoe and gave it a fresh coat of paint as well. This has been an exciting project and we look forward to many more with this client. This project cost just over $11k to complete. Remember, estimates every wednesday. 402.915.0824
