CONTAINER GARDENING DOESN'T TAKE MUCH SPACE

If you have limited space or poor soil conditions, container vegetable gardening can open up excellent possibilities for growing healthy food for you and your family.

1. When choosing containers, use pots, buckets, or containers with drainage holes. Their size will depend on the type of variety you plan to grow. Tomatoes will require larger containers, while herb varieties can thrive in smaller pots.

2. Experiencing adequate growth and healthy plants requires selecting the correct potting soil. Never skimp when choosing your potting soil; use high-quality soil that retains moisture yet provides good drainage. Mixing in compost will enrich the soil and nourish your plants.

3. Choose varieties well-suited for container gardening, such as lettuce, peppers, radishes, tomatoes, and herbs like parsley and basil. Always consider each plant's sunlight and space requirements when planting in containers.

4. Due to the smaller, more contained area, your plants may dry out more quickly than those planted directly in the ground. Always check the soil moisture frequently, especially during hot weather, and water regularly.

5. Nutrients can be washed away when watering, so frequently fertilizing is vital. A well-balanced fertilizer or organic options like compost or worm castings are excellent for keeping your plants healthy and happy.

6. Most vegetables need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. To ensure adequate sunlight, position your pots and containers in a location that receives the sunlight required. Rotating them as necessary helps to ensure even growth.

7. Look often for signs of pests and diseases. Companion planting is an excellent and organic pest control method that can introduce beneficial insects to help keep your plants healthy.

8. Regularly harvesting your vegetables encourages further production and ensures you enjoy them at their peak freshness.

IF YOU GET A LATE START, PLANT THESE FAST-GROWING VARIETIES

We all need to grow a home garden, whether large, medium, small, or just in containers on the patio. So, if you are getting a late start with your spring garden due to late frosts, too much rain, workload, or just life, spring into action with some fast-growing vegetables.

Typically, "fast-growing" means (60) days or less to harvest, and a few of these varieties are Zucchini, Summer Squash, Cucumbers, Carrots, Broccoli, Peas, Bush Beans, Kale, early Cabbage, Cauliflower, Beets, Turnips, Kohlrabi, Scallions, Collards, Swiss Chard.

Even faster-growing vegetables that can be ready in (40) days or less include: Loose-Leaf Lettuce, Mustard, Spinach, Radishes, and Chives.

Most herbs are fast-growing, as well, and can be ready to harvest in (45-60) days, depending on the variety. Basil and Cilantro are two of the fastest-growing herbs in the garden.

Once you plant your Heirloom seeds, ensure they get lots of moisture for germination and emergence. We usually soak our seeds for approximately (4) hours in water before we sow them in the garden. Soaking your seeds beforehand softens up some of the more rigid shells, gets a good amount of moisture into the seeds, and gears them up for germination.

Once planted, your seeds and seedlings will need (1-2) inches of water per week during this time. Your best bet is to use a soaker hose or some form of irrigation method or spray them with a mist early in the morning. You can also use organic mulch such as compost, grass cuttings, or straw to keep your plants cooler and hold moisture in the soil.
