Caldwell Architects was proud to join the University of West Florida yesterday afternoon for the groundbreaking of The Synapse, a new advanced intelligence, cybersecurity, and engineering research building.

Designed in collaboration with Perkins&Will, the 55,000 square-foot facility will serve as a hub for innovation, housing specialized labs, advanced technology, and collaborative research spaces that support computational intelligence, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotics, engineering, and material science.

The design of The Synapse is inspired by the way neurons connect within the human brain, with the building’s Y-shaped form reflecting the concept of synaptic connection and information exchange. This neuromorphic design approach creates an environment that encourages collaboration across disciplines, bringing together research labs, office hubs, and open gathering spaces to support discovery and innovation.

A central multi-story atrium and interconnected circulation paths were intentionally designed to promote interaction and idea sharing, creating a facility that is as much about connection as it is about technology.

We are honored to partner with UWF on a project that will help shape the future of research, education, and economic growth across Northwest Florida.

We’re excited to share our latest project at Auburn University, a state-of-the-art research laboratory located underneath a formal courtyard between the Gavin Engineering Research Lab and the Brown-Kopel Engineering Student Achievement Center. Caldwell introduced the idea of creating a new entrance to the lab, connecting it with a terraced lawn to one of the main pedestrian arteries on campus - the Ginn Concourse. This approach showcased the unique program for the lab and allowed daylight to filter through the laboratory spaces.

From electronics manufacturing to analytical microscopy and maker spaces, the lab is equipped with cutting-edge tools that support multidisciplinary research and idea generation. A true ecosystem for innovation.

Sited among majestic oaks overlooking Mobile Bay, Bayside Academy is a PK–12 college preparatory school in Daphne, AL. Caldwell designed a new 28,500 SF middle school to replace the original 1960s facility, drawing inspiration from the campus’s coastal Alabama vernacular with a hipped roof, generous porches, and classic detailing. The result is a dynamic learning environment that honors the campus character and creates a welcoming new entrance.
