Today we are back and I am showing you one of my all time favourite projects which is how to grow an amazing free strawberry patch, no matter what size garden you have.

Strawberries are one of my favourite fruits to eat, and luckily they couldn’t be easier to grow. Unlike a lot of fruits which take years to product a good harvest, strawberries will crop heavily almost right away, and continue cropping for a good three to four years.

The best part about growing strawberries is each strawberry plant will allow you to grow five or six new strawberry plants completely for free, allowing you to turn just one or two into a massive strawberry patch for no extra cost.

When it comes to growing strawberries, they can be started via seed, but I prefer to start with a small potted plant, or bare root plant, as they will produce a better crop in the first year.

Strawberries can be planted out in almost any harp you have in the garden, just make sure they are getting a good amount of sunlight, and are not being left to dry out.

Usually around late spring you will see little flowers forming and that’s what develops into the delicious fruits. After another month of so, your plant will send out these runners and that’s where we propagate the new plants from.

It is worth noting, if you are after a bumper harvest and no more plants, it’s important to remove these runners as they take energy away from fruit production.

It is also a good idea to replace your strawberry plants every three to four years as after this time frame, they start to produce slightly smaller harvests.

Please stay tuned as I’ve got some really fun videos coming soon,

As always thank you for watching, I love you all,
Joe 😊🌱💚

Today we are back and with the warmer drier weather fast approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to team back up with my friends affinitywater , to share a few of my top tips to be water wise in the garden.

For years I wasted water in the garden, but with a few small changes to my growing habits, not only do I now save water and money, I’m getting better results too.

There are so many tips I could have shared, but here are a few of my favourites, and please let me know in the comments what your favourites are too. Gardening as I always say is about having fun and learning through trial and error, but these tips combined with Affinity Water’s My Water Footprint quiz, will help you get off to a great start this spring!

AD. Today we are back and I have teamed up with my friends to help you get your garden ready for spring, by sharing a few tips I wish I knew when I first started gardening.

In this video we only touch the surface, so if you would like more advice around how to save money and water in the garden this spring please visit and check out their My Water Footprint challenge via their website.

Over the years I have picked up so many tips and tricks to make getting the garden started in spring that little bit easier. But with all the excitement of the new growing season approaching, just remember the most important thing is to have fun in the garden.

When it comes to these tips, experiment and find what works for you. For example, some higher quality composts, or larger pots can be watered from the top just fine, other will benefit greatly from bottom watering. Gardening is all about having fun, and learning through trial and error, but these tips and Affinity Water’s My Water Footprint quiz, will help you get off to a great start this spring, while being water wise in your garden.

As always thank you for watching, and I love you all.

AD Today we are back and I am showing you how you can turn an unloved patch of garden into productive garden beds and borders, without the back breaking work.

Garden beds and borders are a fantastic way to grow a variety of plants, flowers and vegetables at home, but the traditional method of digging over the land to make them, is not only back breaking work, but will often leave your border riddled with weeds.

Which is why I have teamed up with my friends to show you how to use the No Dig method, combined with their all purpose peat free compost, to have the best growing season ever, without breaking your back with hard work.

I’ve been growing in garden beds for around ten years now and I wish I started using this no dig method earlier, especially at the allotment where this was filmed. Simply line the bottom with cardboard to supress any weeds, and then your Miracle-Gro all purpose compost on top. The deeper you go the better really, but the safe zone for me in year one is around 8 inches. Over the course of the year the cardboard will break down and the compost will work it’s way into the soil below, giving you a perfect growing area. Then year after year, just add a thin top layer of fresh compost, for the best results.

Miracle-Gro All Purpose peat free compost has been specifically formulated using only the highest quality ingredients, providing three months feed for your plants to get off to the best start possible. As the season continues, after three months your plants might benefit from a weekly dose of Miracle-Gro liquid or granular feed, to keep them growing to their full potential 😊🌱

As always thank you for watching, and I love you all,
Joe 💚🌱

AD Today we are back and I am sharing one of my favourite garden builds we have done to date, with the help of my friends

Last weekend we finally decided to start my grandads garden revamp, and the first area to tackle was the old decking.

This area used to be used to host many family gatherings and BBQs and was really a hub of activity when I was little. So we decided to take on the challenge of bringing it back to life, with this Mediterranean lake terrace inspired build.

As you know I’m a gardener who grows plants not the type of gardener who does landscaping, so hopefully seeing how easily we transformed this area with the help of Argos, you can take inspiration and start your own garden project too.

They have so many fun products to choose from, but the items I selected are the following:

Habitat June 5 Seater Garden Sofa Set
Genesis Natural Indoor Outdoor Rug
Habitat Outdoor Side Table
Argos Home 3m x3 m Garden Gazebo
Habitat Stripe Outdoor Cushion
Habitat Solar Lanterns
Argos Home Charcoal Drum BBQ
Habitat Warm Solar String lights

We are so happy with how this build turned out, and I can’t wait to show you more.

As always thank you for watching, I love you all,
Joe 🌱😊💚

Today we are back and I have teamed up with my friends to show you one of my favourite ways to bring beneficial wildlife into your garden, to help improve the organic balance, by simply just keeping some of your spring garden waste.

This time of the year the weather can be unpredictable so with the help of Mountain Warehouses amazing spring collection, we can get outside and enjoy the garden and nature, no matter what the weather decides to throw our way.

Now is the time of the year where many of us will be getting ready to get out into the garden to give it a spring clean. This could be raking up leaves, mowing lawns, pruning fruit trees such as figs, or even just tidying up perennials such as roses and shrubs. Naturally this spring clean creates a lot of garden waste, but this year maybe avoid just throwing it away.

Instead bundle it all up and place this waste into these little DIY teepees. They couldn’t be easier to make and I feel they give your garden a rustic look too. Each one holds a surprising amount of prunings and twigs, and the best part is they are so beneficial to the local wildlife. These teepees will provide a habitat and shelter for a vast array of beneficial insects such as ladybugs, beetles, hoverflys, solitary bees and so much more, as well as providing shelter for small mammals, reptiles and amphibians to safely navigate the garden.

Giving your garden a spring clean and your plants a prune may be beneficial for us humans and plants, but it unfortunately affects our garden mini beasts as they thrive in a slightly messy garden. So placing this garden waste neatly back into the garden gives them a helping hand they need. This helps create a balanced garden giving you the best results you’ve ever had, through better pollination and less pest damage too.

And thank you Mountain Warehouse for gifting me the clothing for this video. I really put their winter clothing through its paces in the garden, and it not only kept me warm and dry, it looks as good as new, so now I can’t wait to wear their spring collection too.

And as always thank you for watching,

AD Today we are back and I am showing you how I fill up my raised beds and large containers, in a way that’s affordable, yet effective.

Raised beds and large containers are a fantastic way to grow a variety of plants, flowers and vegetables at home, but they can get very expensive to fill.

Which is why I have teamed up with my friends to show you how to use the Hugelkultur method, combined with their all purpose peat free compost, to have the best growing season ever, without breaking the bank.

I’ve been growing in raised beds for around ten years now and I’ve filled every one of my beds using this method, with tremendous results. Simply line the bottom with cardboard to supress any weeds, then like a lasagna, add old logs, twigs, organic matter, top soil and then your Miracle-Gro all purpose compost on top.

Just make sure you add a layer of compost that is at least 10-12 inches deep for the best results.

Today we are back and I am showing you a few of my favourite ways to save money by turning common household waste into useful tools for your garden.

Spring is fast approaching now, which is super exciting, but it means we don’t have long left to stock up on household waste to use in the garden. I’m keeping as many bits and bobs as possible to use for seed sowing, as we have got a lot of seed packets waiting to spring into life this year 🤣

When it comes to growing food at home, while fancy kit and tools are great, you don’t need any to get started. For year I used these four tips to get my garden going. I’ve got so many little upcycling tips for the garden so if you find these four useful let me know and I can make another video.

Fruit/cookie punnets make the best seed starting propagators, especially if they have a built in lid! Just make sure to add drainage holes in the bottom if they don’t have some already.

Make sure to keep any old tins as they can be used to make really effective vertical planters, which can be made in a way where they are self watering too! I like to add a bit of paint to take them to the next level, but please only plant very small plants as they will soon outgrow the tins.

Every year I save hundreds of toilet roll tubes as they make the best seed starting trays for plants such as beans and peas which have deep roots. The best part is you can then plant the whole tube out into the compost when your seedlings are big enough.

And last but not least if you poke a few holes in the lid of your old milk cartons, they can be used as a great DIY watering can for your seedlings. If you like another hole in the handle it works even better 😊

As always I hope you are having a lovely week, and I love you all 😊🌱💚,
Joe

Today we are back and I am showing you my journey over the last five years of growing and enjoying fresh basil at home, and the best part is you only need a few cheap plants from the supermarket to get started.

Basil is one of my all time favourite herbs, not just for its amazing culinary uses but also as a great companion plant in the garden too. However, unfortunately it is one plant that seems to cause gardeners quite a few issues to grow, but the good news is that’s often not your fault, and is easy to fix!

Most basil plants fail because of how they are grown and sold. For the most part you will buy basil in small pots of relatively poor compost, and in these pots you will see 30 or more small basil plants. Each basil plant can grow into its own bush if grown and pruned properly so we need to give them some love.

It all starts by gently separating small clusters of basil, and potting them on into larger pots filled with good quality compost. As a side note this is great as you get multiple plants from the one you bought.

Then over the spring and summer just keep them watered and in a sunny spot and you will notice they will be so much happier. As they grow instead of picking each leaf, keep harvesting the tips, which will cause the plant to bush out giving you a healthier plant, and more to harvest.

Basil is an annual plant so will die off at the end of each year, but you can take a few cuttings, which can be grown on a windowsill over winter and then planted back out the following spring to repeat the process again.

Thank you so much for watching, the last few weeks have been tough with everything going on and your support means the world,

I love you all,
Joe 😊🌱💚🙏

Today we are back and I am showing you how to use up those old bananas we we all have from time to time. Bananas which are starting to turn a bit brown are also in my opinion the most flavourful and the skins make an amazing food for your plants.

Now if you are anything like me you will often have brown bananas in your fruit bowl, so here is my favourite zero waste recipe to use them up, which you also get a free plant fertiliser as a byproduct too. And no we are not making banana bread 🤣

All you need to do is mash down your bananas until they are smooth and then add in some brown sugar and self raising flour into the mixture. Roll until the dough is 1cm thick, sprinkle over a lot of cinnamon, slice and roll into buns and bake on gas mark 5 for about 25 minutes. What you will end up with are the most delicious banana cinnamon swirls.

It’s worth noting the mixture can be very sticky so make sure to use a lot of flour on your surface and also wet your hands to stop it all becoming a big mess. For every 150g of banana I use 110g of flour and 1 cup of sugar.

Bake the skins with the swirls and then crush them down into a powder which can be used as a great plant food. Banana skins are packed full of nutrients which our plants love, and by making it into a powder rather than that viral banana tea, you prevent those pesky little flies and it lasts a lot longer.

I hope you are having a lovely week, and I love you all 😊🌱💚
