Homesteading isn't just about growing and raising your own food, it's about self sufficiency. Your home is a big part of homesteading, sometimes things need to be fixed or replaced like a faucet, toilet, door or window. Perhaps you need a new light or electrical outlet installed, or maybe your kitchen or bathroom is too small or outdated and needs remodeling or expansion. Hiring a contractor is expensive and could take alot of time before they can even get to your job. Homesteaders rely on other homesteaders for help with the things that they don't know how to do themselves, and that's why we are here. We can help with those minor repairs and construction projects, all at a rate much lower than a contractor and with the ability to use items you already have around your homestead or get 2nd hand. If you need help with your home, we would be happy to help. There aren't many things we cannot do, so let us know what you need and we will let you know how we can help.

Having a greenhouse is important to homesteading, especially here in Colorado with a slightly shorter growing season between frosts. Most people don't have the money to buy one, or lack the construction skills to build one. That's where innovation can be helpful, to create something with what you already have or something that can be repurposed. I am fortunate that I have a small garage on my property that is too small to be used as a garage, so I am converting it into a greenhouse/chick brooder/worm farm/ham radio station. There is a concrete pad in the front of it that I enclosed with windows I bought at the Restore for about $400, and now I have a multi-purpose homesteading structure. It is not complete yet but hopefully will be ready to use sometime this summer. Rural Homesteading can help with your greenhouse project, just send us a message and get started today.

Oh the times they are a'changin.

With the supply chain issues we have been experiencing since the pandemic, people are looking to be more self reliant. People have realised just how vulnerable our food supply is to disruption, just look at the recent egg shortage we had. When they were available, the price had trippled. I heard alot of people talking about getting chickens, but they didn't know the first thing about them, don't have construction knowledge, don't know how to get started or any number of reasons to not have chickens. Sometimes people just need help, or need someone to teach them and show them. We want to help them. We can teach, show and construct. We can help you get started and teach you what you need to know, then you can take over from there. If you would like help on your homesteading journey, send us a message. We would be happy to help.

The breed of chicken is important depending on your requirements and desires. I have chosen the Buff Brahma for my flock as I believe they are the perfect bird for my needs. They are a heritage breed that is considered dual purpose, which is good for both eggs and meat. They are a larger breed that is too big for the aerial predators in my area, and they are not very interested in flying. They are a cold hardy bird that has a pea comb which is more resistant to frostbite, and they have feathers on their feet. They take a little longer to mature from chicks, but they also lay more eggs in the winter than other breeds. They are known for their docile disposition and great around children and animals. My first flock had a few hens with single combs and they got frostbitten on the tips.

About 2 weeks ago I noticed an uninvited guest in the coop one night after the automatic door had closed. I was able to determine that she had jumped/flown onto the roof of the coop and then down into the yard. She left in the mornings for a couple days and came back before bed, but now she no longer leaves at all. It says alot about a coop that a chicken can leave as she pleases but chooses not to. She is now a permanent resident and is even paying rent with white eggs. I believe she is a brown leghorn.

Over the winter of 22/23 I discovered a few issues with the enclosure so I made some modifications to help the flock over the winter. The new flock has moved in and are thriving in the Coop de Ville with 22 hens and 3 roosters. The hens started laying around the winter solstice, and the current daily high egg count stands at 14. The roosters are quite friendly and none of them are as****es, they even treat the ladies nicely.

Processing day. I have never processed a chicken before, it was quite the learning experience. I have never killed anything before so it was a little tough to get started. This was something I needed to do if I am going to provide for myself and my family, so I pushed myself despite my apprehension. I am glad I did and now all future processing will be much easier. It is never easy to take a life, but in homesteading it is necessary. I was grateful for the bird's lives and I thanked them for their sacrifice. Since they were older laying hens they will need to be slow cooked and used for soups and stews, they will likely be tougher and not good for frying or roasting

August 2023, set up an outdoor processing station to send my original flock to freezer camp.
