Ah, marble. It’s as timeless as it is varied and still a popular choice in the design industry.

Marble is a soft and porous natural material, so it is less suited for kitchen use due to staining. It is one of the more affordable surfaces, running from $10 - $35 per square foot. Similar to quartz, marble slabs on average are 9’ x 5’. And yes, you’ll want to reseal it every couple of years to keep it looking new.

You may notice that some material is available in 2cm and some in 3cm. Stay tuned for an explanation on the differences and how the type you choose influences fabrication, installation and cost.

Looking for eye-catching color and movement in your countertops? Meet quartzite.

Quartzite is naturally occurring in many places, including here in Arizona. It is one of the densest and hardest materials to cut which means the fabrication and installation may cost more than other comparable materials.

Both granite and quartzite can be polished (shine) or honed (muted), depending on your preferred finish. Quartzite is porous and will need to be resealed every couple of years to keep it looking new. However, it will tolerate cutting and heat, making it suitable in kitchens and elsewhere. Slabs typically run 10’ x 6’ (120” x 72”) standard but can vary. Prices for quartzite can run from $25 - $70 per square foot, depending on material and amount of slabs needed.

Quartz is a manufactured hard surface that lends a modern or edgy flair to kitchens, baths, mud rooms, show rooms and more. Quartz slabs are consistent due to their controlled production, meaning you will have coherent results across rooms and projects. And unlike natural products like granite or quartzite, quartz does not need to be resealed every couple of years. However, cutting directly on quartz is not recommended as the surface will scratch. Placing hot pans or objects directly on this surface is also not recommended.

Quartz slabs typically run 9’ x 5’ and can be anywhere from $8 - $40 per square foot, depending on the material.
