Used milk cartons make the best tree pots:

1) They're free
2) They're tall and skinny, allowing for a deeper tap root
3) To plant, just peel back the carton from the soil and you're good to go!

No cutting is required; just screw on the lid, pop open the top, rinse it out, punch a few holes in the bottom, and add your dirt.

In most cases these just go straight to the landfill so nice to repurpose them and more importantly, avoid using single use plastic pots.

This is a new chaparral yucca plant (Hesperoyucca whipplei). They have very sturdy roots, so they're super easy to germinate en masse in flats and then transfer individual plants to pots. That little loop acts like a battering ram, pushing through the soil so that the tip of the leaf can emerge unscathed.

Hard to believe this handful of nuts will someday be a beautiful grove of Juglans californica (California black walnut)....
