Maybe it’s just me, but I trust the dirt in my garden more than I trust the produce aisle.

Between listeria, E. Coli, and salmonella outbreaks in veggies line like lettuce and recent scrutiny surrounding pesticides used by the popular Driscoll’s commercial berry production, it’s enough to make you think twice about where your food comes from.

Growing your own food isn’t about fear—it’s about knowing exactly what went into it, how it was grown, and having a little more control over what ends up on your family’s plate.

Plant the garden. Learn the skill. Grow the food.

Today is the day everyone has been waiting for—the day the cattle head back out to pasture!

For them, it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet of fresh green grass that’ll keep them happy until fall, when we transition back to feeding the hay harvested right here behind our farm. Watching them kick up their heels, race through the field, and dive nose-first into that tall grass never gets old. They’ve been eyeing it up for weeks, and once the gate opens, it’s nothing but pure excitement as they frolic through the pasture without a care in the world—except deciding which patch of grass to munch next.

Rotational grazing isn’t just good for the cattle—it’s good for the land, too. By moving them through different sections of pasture, we allow grasses time to recover, encourage deeper root growth, improve soil health, reduce erosion, distribute manure more evenly, and help naturally suppress weeds. The cattle get access to fresh forage, and the land stays healthier and more productive year after year.

It’s a win-win for everyone involved—especially the cows. Now let’s pray for rain so these pastures can keep up this summer!

HIVE UPDATE! 🐝

A little later than planned, but today I finally added the deep supers to both of our honey bee hives. I realized I was three frames short for one of the supers since I accidentally broke some earlier this spring (oops, I’m a wee bit aggressive at times lol), so I had to order more and wait for them to arrive. Jake quickly assembled them for me last night so I could get them on the hives today!

Both colonies are doing excellent and are already running out of room. Within minutes of adding the new super, bees were making their way up to investigate the empty frames and get to work. It’s always exciting to watch them expand their space and start preparing for honey storage.

This season is off to a much stronger start than last year. Since both colonies had to start completely from scratch in 2025, a lot of their energy went into building comb and establishing their homes. This year, we were able to give them a head start by reusing some of those drawn comb frames, allowing them to focus more on raising brood, storing resources, and hopefully producing a surplus of honey. If they keep up this pace, we’re looking forward to a much better honey harvest this fall. 🐝🍯
