Creating Christmas in June

Trying to get a few things finished up before we head to Disneyland in a couple days. I just finished this Santa watercolor and now it’s off to the computer for scanning, editing, and all those final little touches before he’s ready for the season.

Painting some chickadees today. It’s the first Monday of my kids summer break so my three little chickadees are home too. Here’s to new routines, running the kiddos around to do all the summer things, and finding time to create in between it all.

Hello June.

Here’s to longer days filled with sunshine and making memories. I just love the month June. Not too hot not too cold and knowing you still have the whole summer ahead.

And bonus, it’s my birthday month!

Happy June friends.

From sketch to paint.

Okay, so if you saw my last post, you know I started this butterfly with a fairly precise sketch. Like really mapped out, trying to get everything just right. But then I realized, since I was planning to do multiple butterflies, that I really didn’t want to go through that process multiple times 😅

So I scrapped that version and did quick outlines so I could get to the fun part, painting.

And honestly, that little switch made it so much better. Especially since I’ve been trying to paint “looser”.

Here’s the end result. What do you all think? 🤍

Starting something new over here…

Today’s studio time has been all about sketching butterflies for a western inspired collection I’ve been slowly working on. I’ll be honest… drawing and sketching stage is probably my least favorite part of my process. It always feels a little slow and messy while I’m figuring things out. But it’s a necessary step before I get to the parts I really love.

Once the outlines are done, that’s when the fun starts. Painting is hands down my favorite part, watching the watercolor spread, layering colors, and bringing the artwork to life.

For now though, it’s sketching and dreaming about what these will become.

Do you enjoy the sketching stage of creating, or are you more of a “get me to the fun part” person like me?

Just me and my sketchbook today.

I decided to play around with gouache, a medium I’m definitely not totally comfortable with yet. I ended up painting this little hydrangea on a whim. No plan, no pressure… just experimenting and seeing what would happen.

Truthfully, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I just figured it out as I went, with zero expectations attached to the outcome.

Sometimes I need a painting session like this, no agenda, no finished product in mind, especially while I’m letting ideas simmer for the next big project. It’s amazing what shows up when you’re just having fun with it.

And even when it turns into a bit of a mess, I always walk away with something , a lesson, a new technique, or at least a good reminder to loosen up.

Do you ever create just to play, with no end goal?

It’s been a while since I’ve shared any of my wallpaper designs, but this one deserves a little spotlight.

It has been my most popular design on Spoonflower and it’s easy to see why. The textured leaves have a subtle almost tropical feel, but the warm golden beige tones and creamy ivory background keep it soft, neutral, and oh so sophisticated.

It’s one of those patterns that works just about anywhere, from cozy bedrooms to bright entryways, it's bold and adds warmth but neutral enough that it doesn't overwhelm the space.

It's also available in fabric and multiple color ways and scales.

You can find it in my Spoonflower shop here:
