Yep, we need the new farm family and bad!!!!!

Can a Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription service help more small farms survive in today’s consolidated food landscape? In 2014, economic researcher Mark Paul conducted in-person interviews with 16 Massachusetts farmers for Ecotrust and E3 Network’s Future Economy Initiative. The area…

I am truly wondering what accounts for the growth in this page's following. Posting have been slow given my work on the new book but I surely appreciate the support. Peace.

Here's a song from my Polish shtetl past: Monday, potatoes. Tuesday potatoes, Wednesday and Thursday potatoes. Friday and Saturday potatoes. Sunday, again potatoes. Everyday potatoes.

And the point? Trace any peasant food system to its roots and you'll find one predominant food upon which an entire diet revolved. Which leads me to believe that a truly "local and sustainable" food systems will look a whole lot less fancy than we might otherwise imagine.

I encourage you all to read With These Hands - Women working on the land by Joan M. Jensen. It's a telling-it-like-it-was-and-is type of book about the struggle to access and sustain a life on the land. It will put the history of land access into historical context and offer another reason (as if I needed one) to work directly with farmers. Really enjoyed it.

Landowners in Nebraska have been receiving "holiday cards" in the mail from TransCanada this week, containing empty threats to take their land through eminent domain for Keystone XL — even though they have no such authority.

If any of you friend my personal page please attach a message in your request so I know who you are. Having said that, I'm not up to anything different then you. We are all trying to make sense of no-sense with more or less grace. We are all fighting the good fight, attempting to care for the soil and our brothers and sisters despite this winner take all economy that can be cruel to the extreme

Perhaps hearing of another person's struggle makes our own easier to bare and you know I won't sugar coat anything despite the fact that my life could use a little sugar coating from time to time. You know that wouldn't be real and we wouldn't trust each other and what good is talking theory when the funk of real life is so much tricker than theory, so much more nuanced then instructions on raising chickens or making jam.

The way I figure it what we are really going for is a spiritual turning - first in ourselves and then in world around us. But that s**t needs to be deep if that s**t is to be real. So happy digging my beloveds and if you care I will hook up with you in my Harriet world cause s**t be getting real real over there. LOVE!!

To all those who have recently liked my world, much love!

And now a word or two from your favorite old codger:

The problem with family farmers? No family. Which is why we have to create the new farm family. Consider it the evolution of the CSA - your money AND your time (and frankly lots more of each). But of course this presumes you've left the market economy (with all its obligations) in lieu of the home economy (with all its obligations) after you read the next book (which, I promise, is well underway). If you think I was full of spit fire before well hell's bells taint nothing compared to this baby. Darn if I'm not calling us to task and not a moment too soon. Cause, well, all the cute-ass hoedowns and branded value added yada yada combined ain't gonna make this life a go unless we show up big time. Urban and rural, farmers, farmwives and the whole damn family. Yes sir.
