Here’s a rotted fence, and here’s exactly why it happened.

See the bottom? The pickets were sitting right against the dirt. Over time the soil holds moisture, the wood absorbs it, and it rots out from the bottom way faster than it should.

That’s why we leave a two inch gap along the whole fence line. The wood never touches the dirt, so it stays dry and lasts years longer. Small detail, big difference.
