Bora is proud to announce that these fab five have been promoted to Associate! From left to right:

--Sarah Oeftering, AIA, is an Architect who uses an insightful design approach to bring clarity to complex performing arts projects, including the award-winning TCU Van Cliburn Concert Hall.

--Sara Rae is Bora’s Studio Manager and an ambassador of our culture, bringing joy (and the occasional confetti cannon) to our day-to-day while keeping our operations in tip-top shape.

--Nicole De Jong, RA, is a versatile Architect and valued mentor who leads inclusively, guiding teams from design goals to ex*****on while remaining calm under pressure.

--Thuy Le, AIA, is an Architect whose innate curiosity leads teams to think deeper, resulting in creative designs for public libraries, affordable housing, and learning environments.

--Kate Stuart, IIDA, is an Interior Designer who approaches projects both big and small with grace and determination, working closely with stakeholders to innovate design solutions.

Congrats are in order: Scott Barton-Smith and Amelie Reynaud have been promoted to Associate Principal!

--Scott Barton-Smith, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, is a design architect with more than three decades of experience on large, complex projects in education and research. He is a passionate advocate for mass timber design and construction and brings a depth of knowledge of the material, having contributed expertise in over thirty mass timber projects throughout the nation. Currently he is serving as Bora's design lead for the TAMU Corpus Christi Arts & Media Building with BGK Architects.

--Amelie Reynaud, AIA, is a design architect with a career spanning more than fifteen years across multiple award-winning projects in education, libraries and public spaces. Committed to an equitable, community-based design process and a drive to see women in architecture achieve, Amelie holistically elevates the built environment and its impact. She is currently leading the design to modernize Portland Public Schools' Ida B. Wells High School - Portland, OR.

The Multnomah County Library Holgate Library, scheduled to open this summer, features a structure aligned with the project’s goal to be a healthy, inspiring space for Southeast Portland residents. Cross-laminated timber decks and glue-laminated beams and columns of Douglas Fir comprise a biophilic structure that will reduce embodied carbon by over 61%.

This year’s International Mass Timber Conference March 26-28 will include a tour of this project so attendees can view the structure and see what will become a vibrant, inclusive civic amenity in one of Portland’s most diverse neighborhoods.

Happy International Women’s Day! In the architectural profession that still sees a definitive gender imbalance, 48% of Bora’s registered architects are female and 58% of our total staff are women (including half our principals)! Today and everyday we recognize the women shaping the built environment and, in so many ways, making the world go ‘round.

This week alone, the women of Bora won a project, birthed a baby (!), submitted drawings to the City, cheered for their kids’ sports, consoled grieving friends, celebrated birthdays, planned a wedding, supported family in need, marveled at their children, hosted a game night, wrote poetry, took much-needed time off, finished a bathroom remodel, PR’d at the gym, braved new things, made someone feel beautiful…and supported each other along the way.

The struggle, joy, and honor of womanhood? All real. Here’s to making it happen everyday—on our own terms—and continuing to beat the odds as advocates for a more inclusive, equitable industry.

We are so excited to welcome Niusha Manavi to the Bora family! Currently an architectural grad student at Portland State University, Niusha is our Net Zero Emerging Leaders Intern for the next few months thanks to a generous grant from the Energy Trust of Oregon.

Working with our sustainability team, Niusha is involved in the vital work of calculating embodied carbon on our projects in design and helping us advance our vision of a sustainable and equitable built environment. We’re lucky to have her aboard!

Built on a sloped greenfield site in Tigard, OR, the school serves as the heart of the diverse new community that has grown around it since its arrival. Designed with a large front porch, a generous light-filled commons, and learning neighborhoods to optimize the student experience, the school is a welcoming haven that nurtures community over institution.
