EPISODE 2 — “The Customer Who Couldn’t Pay.”
The phone rang.
It wasn’t a big remodeling job.
It wasn’t a property manager with 50 apartments.
It was a woman with a problem in her home.
She explained what was broken.
Then she asked the question every contractor knows:
“How much is this going to cost?”
We talked about the work.
There was silence.
Then she said:
“I can’t afford that right now.”
Normally, that’s where the conversation ends.
No money.
No job.
But it got me thinking.
There are people all over Tampa Bay living with broken doors, damaged walls, unsafe steps, leaking fixtures and repairs they’ve been putting off for months—or years.
Not because they don’t care about their homes.
Because life happened.
So I’m thinking about trying something different with HandyDudes.
What if occasionally we simply said:
“Don’t worry about the bill. We got this one.”
No invoice.
No payment plan.
Just help.
And then we tell the story.
If the community loves what we’re doing, maybe somebody donates $5.
Maybe a local business provides materials.
Maybe nobody gives anything.
We still helped somebody.
I’m building a business. It has to make money to survive.
But I don’t believe making money and doing something good have to be enemies.
Maybe the paid jobs can help us create the free ones.
Maybe the free ones inspire somebody else to help.
Maybe one repaired home becomes something much bigger.
I don’t know yet.
But I want to find out.
