❄️ Should You Cover Your AC Unit for Winter?
We get this question all the time, and the answer might surprise you: homeowners should NOT fully cover their outdoor AC unit.
Modern systems are built to handle our Idaho winters. Rain, snow, and ice aren’t a big deal , but moisture trapped under a cover CAN be. When a unit can’t breathe, that trapped moisture can lead to rust, corrosion, or even mold inside the cabinet. Plus, a snug cover can make the perfect home for mice looking for a warm winter hideout (and trust us, they love chewing on wires).
Here’s what we recommend instead:
✅ Skip the full cover. Let your system withstand the elements like it was designed to.
🧹 Give it a quick clean-up. Clear away leaves, sticks, and debris around the unit so air can flow freely.
🌨️ If you want extra protection, a simple top-only waterproof cover (just over the fan area) is fine to keep snow from piling directly on top.
❄️ After a heavy snowfall, gently brush snow or ice off the top with your hands or a broom. Never use a shovel.
⚙️ Want peace of mind? Schedule a quick maintenance check before the deep freeze hits. We’ll make sure everything’s in top shape so you’re ready for winter.
Bottom line: skip the tarp, keep it clean, and let your AC breathe this winter.
