There’s a moment in a shop session when the build looks good enough to leave alone.

That is usually when I stop trusting myself and inspect the same surface from one completely unnecessary angle.

The piece is moving forward. My brain is opening another review cycle.

Inventory started with wood glue, No. 8 screws, and jigsaw blades. All legitimate shop needs.

Then Ava added eighteen tennis balls and six bags of Greenies. Kevin reviewed the numbers and confirmed that current inventory was, technically, zero.

Procurement denied the extras. Management has been warned of a possible supply-chain disruption.

SHOP SUPERVISOR AVA | MIDWEEK SPECIAL: CONE OF AUTHORITY

Ava received a temporary equipment upgrade and immediately converted it into a permanent management radius.

The clearance audit found the aisles too narrow, the furniture too close, and everyone else’s authority provisional.

The dog bed remained fully available. Ava selected the wood floor.

Some mornings, the supervisor simply does not feel like working.

Today was one of those mornings.

Ava's solution:
Organize labor.
Establish a picket line.
Figure out the demands later.

Kevin briefly considered crossing.

That lasted about three seconds.

By the end of negotiations, management had apparently agreed to everything.

I was not informed there had been negotiations.

Solidarity, I guess. 😂

Some parts of a build are easier to understand with your hands.

Latitude Rise is about the feel of the edge, the honesty of the wood, and the little decisions that make a finished piece feel right in the room.

A place for the remotes, the drink, and the little things that somehow end up beside the couch.

This C-table started as a practical idea and turned into a lot of careful routing, handwork, and finishing. Small piece. Plenty of work in it.

Unfortunately, somebody did.

Kevin asked if he should write it up.

Ava decided there was no reason to rush into paperwork before exploring... alternative resolutions.

One Greenie later:

INSPECTION RESULT: PASS. ✅

Kevin is learning a lot during this internship.

Mostly things he probably shouldn't. 😂

The pretty cuts get all the attention, but this is the part that makes them possible. Before Latitude Contour can become furniture, the slab has to give us one reliable reference plane. That means the router sled, a shop full of chips, and pass after pass until the high spots are gone. It is repetitive, loud, dusty work, and it is exactly what gives every clean joint and accurate cut later a fair chance. Not glamorous. Absolutely necessary. This is where the furniture starts behaving.

Meet Latitude: Rise.

At first glance, the geometry looks a little impossible: the frame was designed with an approximately five-degree lean, while every shelf stays level.

That is the quiet trick for the eye. Four live-edge Western Red Cedar shelves meet solid maple uprights through fitted all-wood joinery. Rear stabilizing feet fit within roughly eight inches of overall depth, giving the piece a surprisingly slender front-to-back profile. No metal hardware holds the structure together.

I wanted it to bring warmth and function into a room without demanding all the attention: quiet enough to belong, strange enough to make your eye come back and ask how it is standing.
