The strange event occurred when massive rolls of Scotch tape were being unwound at high speed inside the plant. The friction generated such a powerful static charge that it built up into an unseen force field in the factory. Workers reported that when they tried to pass through the area, they were stopped abruptly as if hitting an actual wall.

This bizarre “barrier” wasn’t permanent, but it was a striking demonstration of how much electrical energy can accumulate from something as simple as tape. The effect was so intense that employees had to halt production until the static could safely discharge, proving just how dangerous and unpredictable electrostatic forces can be in industrial settings.

While it sounds like science fiction, the incident became one of the most dramatic real-world examples of static electricity’s power—an invisible phenomenon strong enough to physically stop people in their tracks. ⚡🧱

Stanford University researchers (led by Professor Shanhui Fan) have experimentally demonstrated a solar panel system that can indeed generate electricity at night using the phenomenon known as radiative cooling.

These modified panels work by combining a thermoelectric generator (TEG) with a radiative cooling surface.

At night, the panel surface radiates infrared heat toward the sky, cooling slightly below ambient air temperature—this temperature difference enables the TEG to produce power, generating about 50 milliwatts per square meter during clear nights.

Though this output—~0.05 W/m²—is far less than daytime photovoltaic output (~200 W/m²), it's still sufficient to power low‑energy uses like LED lighting, environmental sensors, and remote data devices.

Significantly, one design optimization study suggests that higher power densities (> 2 W/m²) are theoretically achievable using ideal thermoelectric materials and emitter designs, potentially exceeding other ambient energy harvesting methods like RF or micro‑wind.

The concept is still at the proof-of-concept stage, with ongoing research needed to scale up power output, improve cost-effectiveness, and integrate the technology into real-world solar or off-grid systems.
