What happens after spending a long weekend at the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists conference smelling oils and spending time with awesome people? You feel vibrant, confident, and ready to change the world. Spending time with this group of wonderful people and listening to the research NAHA supports truly gave me an infusion of energy. Sometimes, I wonder, too, if I make any difference. A colleague approached me at the conference and said that her 90 year old mother ripped out her non-native landscaping and filled her yard with native plants for wildlife habitat after listening to one of my presentations hosted by NAHA. It brought tears to my eyes. Perhaps, just maybe, if we can change one person at a time, we can change 8 billion, but it can't be done alone. make the world go round 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻

This week, I also participated in a California Native Plant Society Vegetation Mapping workshop. The area surveyed was full of prickly pear cacti (Opuntia). Since I have many memories of bumping into cacti in the night (my grandmother collected them), they have been my least favorite type of plant. However, to their credit, they provide food and housing to humans and wildlife while enduring difficult conditions. They are fairly fire resistant due to their high water content and regenerate after fire. Did you know that these prickly pear cacti protect the cactus wrens' nests from predators? There were several scattered among this cacti population. What's not to love? Oh yes, I can't forget sitting on them! They definitely know how to make an impression!

In a site evaluation of a property and contemplating changes, it is essential to identify keystone plants and valuable habitat areas to preserve native wildlife before beginning a project. Also, it is important to support your local native plant society as a volunteer and / or member to help educational programs that support wildlife.
