File this one under the "whatever happened to" category. Kolkwitzia amabalis (Beauty Bush) is an old fashioned type of shrub that can still be seen on occasion at old farm houses or older estates. Another example of one season dominance. The key to many of these older type shrubs is to not shear them and to place them where they can just do their thing. Tough plant worthy of the back border or single specimen. I like it's Sideshow Bob appearance.

You can put this under the category of obscure plants. Symplocus paniculata, or Sapphire Berry as it may be more commonly known. This is a grouping here at my house which have never bloomed this prolifically. Hoping that each flower produces the fruit that separates this unusual plant from many others. The genuinely unique fruit of this small tree merits the name, Sapphire Berry.

Happy Mother's Day! In the 25 years of business the most requested plants to be included in a plan to honor mothers and grandmothers are Forget me nots, Lilacs, Peonies, Bleeding Hearts and Lilly of Vallies. These plants are starting to find their way back into the landscape and are easy to locate and to grow. Pretty sure your mom would like one or more!

Aesculus, more commonly known as Buckeyes. I can't think of one that is used in our landscapes that isn't native to the US. The red one pictured is A. pavia and the other is a selection called 'Fort McNair' which is a cross between pavia and the tall white form commonly seen A. hippocastanum. One season tree, but worthy of placement in any landscape.

Viburnum macrocephalum. Snowball Viburnum. Almost always confused as being a hydrangea. The flowers are so identical that it's easier to identify by the bloom time and stature. Starts out lime green and then goes to pure white. Strictly a one-season plant, but like many other one season plants it dominates during its time.

Fothergilla gardenii 'Mt. Airy'. Four seasons of interest, the best being the red fall color in my opinion. Underused native will take full sun to semi shade. Easy to grow. Witchhazel member.

If you are one of our clients you most likely have this on your property. Packera or Senecio, more commonly known as Ragwort. In this case I prefer the Latin. Long blooming spring ground cover, it keeps a nice clean leaf the remainder of the season. Composite. Native. Winner!

Mazus reptans. Easy to grow ground hugging cover. Available in purple and white it makes a nice addition to moist areas in partial shade. If you look close you can see the flowers are identical to those of a Snapdragon. Same family at one time although that may have changed as the rules in nomenclature shift constantly.

A rare glimpse of the Mayapple flowers. A nice native ground cover commonly seen on the forest floor. Emerges and blooms in late April and goes totally dormant by midsummer. One of my favorites.
