🐍 RATTLESNAKE PSA — SOMETIMES THINGS HIT HOME

We’ve been on the Flying E for close to 11 years, and in all that time rattlesnakes around the house have never really been an issue.

Now we’ve had two show up right in our backyard.

And this time it hit home.

Brazer appears to have tangled with one while defending his Fig Trees. Thankfully, Priscilla got him to the vet this morning. He was treated, the swelling has stabilized, and he’s home and on the mend. ❤️🐶

We love the biodiversity of this property and understand that wildlife comes with living where we do.

But there also has to be a line.

Our backyard is where the Figlets run and the dogs play, and alongside it is the new side yard we’re developing for friends, family and community to gather.

We spoke with local wildlife professionals today and have a tentative appointment next Friday to help us problem-solve the Ranch — not to eliminate wildlife, but to create a safer buffer around the places our family and animals use.

So this is simply a reminder to our friends and neighbors:

Pay attention right now.

Watch your kids and pets. Look before reaching around wood piles, rocks, sheds, irrigation equipment or heavy vegetation. And don’t assume that because you haven’t seen a rattlesnake before, they aren’t there.

After almost 11 years, we certainly got that reminder today.

Stay safe, Fig Family. 🐍🌱

And send Brazer some love.

If you can’t, he’ll take ripe figs. ❤️😂

A little personal news from The Fig Hunter… 🌱

After a lot of thought and conversations with my family, I’ve decided to run for the Red Bluff Union Elementary School District Board of Trustees.

For years, The Fig Hunter has been about more than finding figs. It’s been about agriculture, education, community, making connections, and sharing something today that might grow into something much bigger tomorrow.

As a father raising three daughters in this community, I believe it’s time for me to step up and serve in another way.

Don’t worry—The Fig Hunter isn’t becoming a political page. There will still be plenty of figs, fruit, farming, and adventures around here. 😂

I just wanted my Fig Family to hear the news from me:

I’m running for school board. 🌱

Plant a seed. Encourage hope.

FINISHED… FOR NOW

This area started as a severe incline. It isn’t completely finished—because around here, I always seem to come back and add something—but it is finished for now.

We started by drilling deep holes with a gas-powered auger. Then we drove hot-dipped galvanized steel I-beams into the holes using the excavator bucket and secured them with concrete.

Every one of those I-beams was salvaged from a solar-farm project. They were headed for the dumpster, but we knew they still had plenty of life left in them.

Next, we stacked recycled 4-by-12 pressure-treated timbers between the steel beams. Those timbers came from a dock project I worked on back in 2017, where they also would have ended up in the landfill.

As we stacked them, I made sure the spacing was right, drilled through the timbers and installed lag bolts to secure everything in place.

We then turned the corner and repeated the process for the next section. To create the opening for the steps, we welded one I-beam onto another, embedded it in the ground and secured it with concrete—giving it strength from both the weld and the foundation.

In the end, we transformed part of a steep, unused hillside into a level sitting area beneath the shade of the existing oak branches. There is now enough room for a small round table and two chairs, overlooking the western mountains and my favorite view on the entire Flying E.

Well…my favorite view other than looking at my wife. ❤️

Even though this kind of work is what I do professionally as a union pile driver, I genuinely had fun building this. Taking discarded materials, putting my skills to work and creating a place where our family can sit together and watch the sunset makes me proud.

Every time I look at how it turned out, it makes me smile.

It may be finished for now—but, like everything else at the Flying E, it will keep growing.

🍷 THE FIG FLIGHT: WOULD YOU TRAVEL TO TASTE IT?

Fig lovers—we want your honest opinion!

Would you travel to Red Bluff for a seasonal Fig Flight featuring several fresh fig varieties, each with its own color, texture and flavor?

Taste each fig plain first, then experiment with local honey, fig balsamic, sweet chili, flaky sea salt and possibly chèvre. Add the right local wine pairing, and it could become a truly unique Northern California agritourism experience.

Would you order it? How far would you travel to try it—and who would you bring with you?

☀️ FIG FAMILY — HOW ARE YOU BEATING THE HEAT? 🌳

Summer heat waves can be brutal on figs, especially when they’re growing in containers.

And the bigger the tree gets…the more interesting the challenge becomes. 😅

So instead of telling you how we do it, I want to hear from you:

How do you keep your container-grown figs happy during extreme summer heat?

💧 How often are you watering?
🪴 What size containers are you using?
🌱 Do you mulch the surface?
☀️ Full sun or afternoon shade?
💦 Drip irrigation, hand watering, saucers—or something completely different?
🌡️ And at what temperature do you start changing your routine?

There are a hundred different ways to grow figs, and what works in one climate may not work in another.

Drop your location, summer temperatures, and your best container-growing tip in the comments. 👇

Maybe we can all learn a trick or two from each other.

Finding figs, making friends—and figuring out how to keep them alive when Mother Nature turns the oven on. 😂🌳

🍈 Free Fresh Fig Tasting Packs 🍈

We’re heading back to California today, and we’d love to share a little bit of the harvest along the way.

We have a limited number of FREE mixed fresh fig tasting packs available.

Our route today will take us through Canby, then Woodburn Outlets, before heading south on I-5. If you’re along the way and would enjoy a tasting pack, send us a message. We’d be happy to meet up if our timing works out.

Today is especially meaningful to us.

These tasting packs are being shared in honor of our uncle, who recently went to Heaven at nearly 88 years old. He believed in the simple things that mattered most—family, conversation, and sharing a meal.

We’ve always believed that food brings people together, and sharing something you’ve grown has a way of making the world feel just a little smaller.

So if our paths cross today, we’d love to meet you.

And remember…

You can always have dessert before dinner—just to make sure you have room for it. ❤️🌳
