Just because it’s a builder home doesn’t mean you can’t make it feel authentically yours 🤍

Take for example, my virtual clients in Las Vegas.

They purchased a beautiful new build… and then learned that they were somewhat limited with options that the builder was able to provide. Think flooring, finishes, cabinetry, lighting, etc.

So instead of stressing about it, we worked together to visualize their new home within the options available to them. They were able to select finishes that still fit their vision, and I was able to help them see the possibilities in a more tangible way.

Virtual design was totally able to take an overwhelming, totally blank- albeit limited! - canvas and instead provide clear, accurate imagery that has them thrilled to be moving into their new home.

If you’re feeling similarly, whether it’s with a new build or starting your first home design project, virtual design coaching is an ideal option for supporting your journey. Designer BFF is perfect if you find yourself wanting some support without hiring a full-time interior designer.

This is for the moms who want to decorate for the holidays without overspending or swapping out every piece of decor in your home ⤵️

I get it: the temptation to go all-in and fully overboard with decorating is REAL. Especially when you have young kids - after all, how long are they going to be this excited about it??

And then reality hits: you already have boxes of holiday decor taking up approximately half of your garage 🤦‍♀️

If this hits home, I’m right there with you! So let’s find a happy middle ground:

▫️ Instead of just impulse buying new decor, opt for decorating first and then replacing broken pieces or notice where you could thoughtfully add to your collection.

If your kids are the main drive behind this (and let’s be real… when aren’t they 😂), consider making a family tradition. Maybe everyone picks one new piece to add to your collection of pumpkins or holiday village. This curbs the desire to go wild while building memories.

▫️ If you prefer to keep your home more neutral, it’s ok to be more selective about what you display. Opt for rotating in a few favorite pieces or rotating greenery for seasonal colors. You can also layer in richer, warmer hues with curtains or bedding to give a seasonal feel without it screaming “PUMPKINS!”

▫️Remember that cozy is a feeling! Adding layers with cozier blankets and throws plus creating softer lighting with lamps and candles. You can also swap in holiday themed pillows for a touch of whimsy. If you enjoy candles or other scents, choosing warmer, earthier varieties creates the feeling of fall without having to do any redecorating.

When do you decorate for the holidays? We decorate ASAP in this house!

If you’re wanting a home that feels perfectly designed without the hefty price tag or handing over your keys, you’re in the right place 🤍

Designer BFF was designed just for you: someone who has the drive to take on a home design project, wants to make it work on a budget, and is excited to put in the sweat equity.

But it’s natural to have some questions along the way that you’d LOVE to ask an interior designer. After all, who knows about color combos, quality finishes, and if that flooring is really durable than someone with 20+ years in the industry?

If you’ve been thinking about reaching out, now is the perfect time! I’m accepting clients for this fall 🍂 Here are a few FAQs for anyone wondering:

▫️ Is there a minimum time commitment?

Nope! This is a month to month service. You can sign up for consecutive months, or pause and then re-enroll when needed.

▫️ I’m completely starting from scratch… can I still sign up?

Of course! Whether you’re truly at square one or a few steps in and find yourself stuck, Designer BFF is here to support each step of the process.

▫️ Do I need design experience to make the most of our time together?

Not at all! Designer BFF is all about equipping you with the info, insight, and experience that you need to transform your home. All you need is the excitement to dig into your project, and all the questions you can ask in order to make it happen.

▫️ Can you help with how to select a contractor or vendors?

Absolutely! This can be an intimidating part of this process, and you’re wise to have some back-up when it gets to this point. I’m well-versed in this area, as well as translating communication from your contractor!

Sometimes you have to let natural light be the star of the show.

And that’s exactly what we did at our project on 25th Street 🤩

We facilitated a glow up of the downstairs of this home so that it felt lighter and brighter. When designers say that the power of paint or flooring can’t be understated… this is what we mean!

It never ceases to amaze how little tweaks like this can truly transform a space. Be sure to swipe to see the before 👉 and then be sure to let me know what you think of this transformation!

As an interior designer with 2+ decades in the industry, this is what I believe about design today ⤵️

Spoiler: while I use the tools from my degree regularly… I’m not someone who believes that a piece of paper and some classes fully equip you to do anything in life.

So if you’re looking for a designer who is here to empower you to try something new, make a mistake, and learn along the way, keep reading 😉

▪️ Even with a degree in interior design, so many of the formulas, techniques and practices I use with my clients today were learned on the job.

▪️ I’ve made mistakes in my own home even though interior design is my career - which is why you’ll never catch me pretending like any home is “perfect.”

▪️I truly believe anyone can learn interior design - even if you don’t think you have the “eye” for it. Design is just translating learnable skills into something tangible. And you 100% can do that!

▪️ You can’t plan for every challenge or hiccup you’ll face in a design project, even if you’re a professional designer. The secret to success is being willing to roll with the punches and find creative solutions.

▪️Other people don’t have to “get” your personal design style - it just has to perfectly reflect you!

▪️ Sometimes, it isn’t worth it to hire an interior designer for full-service design - you can accomplish so much yourself, especially if you have someone you can turn to for support.

If this is you, make sure you’re following along for more encouragement, tips, and support to build the home of your dreams! 🤍

Love bookshelves for their functionality and storage capacity, but have nooooo idea how to style yours? Let’s change that ⤵️

Here’s how to swap cluttered, over crowded bookshelves for sleek, elegant ones that help pull your room together.

1️⃣ First things first. Let’s get your books on the shelves!

Spread your books throughout the shelves, alternating sides and top to bottom. Aim to keep an equal visual “weight” from left to right. Leave space between each grouping of books and add interest by keeping some upright and others stacked on their sides. You can get creative!

2️⃣ Add personality with framed photos and/or art.

Different sizes and types of frames add variety and create interest. Again, spread them around, going back and forth to create “balance” throughout the shelves. Place larger pieces behind a stack of books or alone, and smaller pieces on top of, or next to, a grouping of books.

3️⃣ Create texture and a softer natural element with greenery.

Using 2-4 plants of different sizes, types, and textures adds variety and interest. Larger plants, or ones that drape, can take up an entire section on their own. Smaller greenery can be grouped with a frame or art, or sit on top of a small stack of books to create an arrangement.

4️⃣ Lastly, decorative pieces can add both beauty and functionality to complete your shelves.

Sentimental objects that spark memories and joy should be displayed. Pretty storage boxes or bowls can help hide things that you want to keep handy within your space. Use your decorative objects to help “fill in” some groupings that may feel a bit incomplete or boring.

Remember, not every inch of your shelves needs to be filled! A good rule of thumb is to leave one third to two thirds of empty space along each shelf.

Love this tip? Be sure to share it with a friend who was just talking about a free way to make her home look more put together.

As a full-service interior designer with over twenty years in the industry, I wish more people knew that you don’t have to have a background in design to create a home you love.

Because at the end of the day, you know your family’s needs the best.

You’re the one who sees the sports equipment, toys, games, and stuffies that inevitably get left in random corners of your home (or right in the doorway) because there’s no dedicated storage.

You’re the one who works from home and is making do on the kitchen counter, coffee table, or from your bed (no judgement!).

And you’re the one who is squishing a dozen loved ones into a space designed for four when it’s time to celebrate holidays, achievements, and birthdays.

Isn’t it time you took charge and created a home that works for you, not against you?

If you’ve been waiting for inspiration to get started, you’re in the right place 🤍 Be sure you’re following .interiors for encouragement, tips, and all things self-empowered home design projects.

I’m not gatekeeping the awesome furniture we bought for our Lakehouse ➡️

So if you want to see what an interior designer purchased for her family, be sure to swipe and save!

It’s no secret that our Lakehouse renovation has been a huge undertaking the past two summers.

(P.S. if you’re new here, we basically gutted and lovingly rebuilt our summer home and its accompanying back house)

Part of that process has included investing in new furniture, furnishings, finishings, and decor for both spaces.

Needless to say, it’s been a labor of love (emphasis on labor!) and now I’m showing you some of my favorite pieces and where to find them.

So go ahead and save this one so you can steal my finds. Each one has been a perfect addition to our home, and has proven to hold up against summer naps, movie nights, and a dog!

Creating a home that is truly yours is a huge milestone.

And for this young family, I was honored to be a part of it.

Just like many of my clients, this young couple had inherited a lot of hand me down furniture, and were still sporting pieces from their college days. With their second child on the way, they wanted to finally create a home that reflected their own aesthetic and be proud to show it off.

Blending high end pieces with some more economical options, we created a home that felt warm & welcoming while also being very family friendly. But the most fun part was creating the sweetest little nursery for their new baby girl!

What room catches your eye?
