Why you won’t see store cartons at our stand, and why we went with plastic 🥚

We get this question a lot, so let’s talk cartons.

Why we can’t reuse store-bought egg cartons:

It’s the law in NY
NYS Ag & Markets requires eggs sold to customers to be in new cartons. Reusing a Walmart or Wegmans carton with our eggs is a no-go. Keeps labeling honest and food safety consistent.

Cardboard = can’t sanitize
Raw eggs can carry Salmonella. Cardboard is porous. Even if it looks clean, bacteria hides in those fibers. We can’t run it through our sanitizer like we do with collection baskets and our own cartons.

Allergy cross-contact
Those cartons came from big plants that also process milk, soy, nuts. We have customers with serious allergies. New cartons mean no surprise exposures.

Traceability
Our label has our farm name, address, pack date, and safe handling instructions. If there’s ever an issue, we’re responsible for what’s in our carton, not what was in it before.

So why plastic cartons instead of paper?

We chose clear, reusable PET plastic cartons because:

They’re actually sanitizable
Unlike paper, we can wash and sanitize these between uses. Hot water + food-grade sanitizer = truly clean. If you return our cartons in good shape, we can reuse them. That’s less waste long-term.

They protect your eggs better Humidity + cardboard = floppy, crushed eggs. Plastic holds its shape in coolers and cars. Fewer cracks, less food waste.

You can see what you’re buying
Farm fresh eggs are gorgeous. Different shell colors, bloom still on. Clear cartons let you pick the dozen you want without opening them 20 times.

They’re recyclable
Our PET #1 cartons are curbside recyclable in most towns. Or bring them back to us. If it’s a Plete’s Homestead carton and it’s not cracked, we’ll sanitize it and run it again.

How you can help:
✅Do return our plastic cartons - drop ‘em in the crate at the stand
🚫Don’t bring us store cartons - but please do recycle them at home
✅Compost your paper cartons - gardens love them

We’re all for reducing waste. But with food, safety has to win. Thanks for trusting us to do it right.

Coop-to-Carton vs. Store-Bought Eggs: Why It Matters 🐔🥚

Ever wonder why farm eggs hit different? Here’s the breakdown:

Time ⏰
Store-bought: Can be 30-60 days old before they hit the shelf. The USDA allows 30 days from lay date to carton date, then 30 more days to sell
Coop-to-carton: Gathered today or yesterday. From the nesting box to your fridge in under 48 hours

What the hens eat 🍽️
Store-bought: Mostly corn/soy feed. "Vegetarian fed" means no bugs, which is not natural for chickens
Coop-to-carton: Our hens free-range daily. Grass, clover, grubs, kitchen scraps. You taste that variety

How they live 🐓
Store-bought: Even "cage-free" usually means thousands of birds in a barn, no outdoor access
Coop-to-carton: Small flock, fresh air, sunshine, dirt baths. Happy hens = better eggs

What you see + taste 🍳
Store-bought: Pale yolks, thin whites that spread out in the pan
Coop-to-carton: Deep orange yolks that stand tall. Thick whites that don’t run. Rich flavor you can’t fake

Washing + bloom 🥚
Store-bought: Washed + sanitized, which removes the natural protective "bloom." That’s why they need refrigeration
Coop-to-carton: Unwashed keeps the bloom intact. They’re shelf stable for weeks, though we still refrigerate for safety

Once you crack a fresh one, you won’t go back.

Swing by Plete’s Homestead on Swamp Rd for $4/dozen coop-to-carton eggs. Laid by happy hens, collected by hand.
