What happens when kids spend a week outdoors creating, exploring, writing, and wondering?

That's the idea behind Camp Truetimber.

This summer we're partnering with Open Space Education and Richmond Young Writers to offer hands-on outdoor experiences that connect kids with nature, creativity, and discovery.

Some Saturdays are just better than others.

We spent this one surrounded by trees, wildlife, good company, and a community that cares deeply about the natural world.

Thank you to the Virginia Living Museum for welcoming us for Claire Hubbard Day of Service. It was a privilege to spend the day caring for a place that means so much to so many people.

This week's Tree ID comes from Tree Care Advisor, Scott Turner!

Special Edition: Tree ID & Animal ID

During our Claire Hubbard Day of Service at the Virginia Living Museum in Yorktown, we noticed one of the animals taking full advantage of the fresh browse created by our pruning work.

Can you identify both the animal and the tree? The animal may be easier than the tree, but both play an important role in the forest ecosystem.

We'll reveal the answer next week!

Last Saturday, the Truetimber team spent the day at the Virginia Living Museum for the first Claire Hubbard Day of Service.

Claire Hubbard dedicated decades of her life to the museum and the community she loved. We were honored to help continue that legacy through a day focused on stewardship, education, and service.

There was plenty of tree work to be done, but there was also time to talk with visitors, answer questions from curious kids, meet some wildlife, and even spend a little time among the dinosaurs.

One of the things we love most about places like the Virginia Living Museum is how they connect people with nature. Watching families learn about trees, animals, and the natural world throughout the day felt like a fitting way to honor Claire's impact on this community.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, watched our climbers work, or simply shared the day with us. We look forward to making this an annual tradition.

Today we pause.

Memorial Day is a time to remember and honor those who gave everything. Around Virginia, it’s also a day spent outside—with family, friends, and the spaces we call home.

We’re grateful to be part of a community where these moments matter.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Tree care is about more than trees.

It’s about people. Neighbors. The communities we get to be part of every day.

We’re grateful to work in Richmond and to build relationships that last beyond the job.

This week’s Tree ID comes from Tree Care Advisor Aidan Stewart.

This week’s tree is one that I forget exists until I see its crazy colors in bloom. It also has one of the wildest names of any tree I’ve encountered. Native to Asia, this species is known for its fragrance and vibrant colors. It does have a tendency to spread pretty rapidly and is sometimes considered invasive. While not native, pollinators are still attracted to it.

Last week's answer: Smoketree (cotinus)

Join us May 30 at the Virginia Living Museum as we partner up to honor Claire Hubbard's legacy with a special Day of Service!

Hubbard Tree Care joined the Truetimber family in March, and we couldn't be happier to continue the Hubbards' commitment to environmental stewardship.

We’re proud to have helped bring Belle Isle’s new Nature Exploration Area to life right here in Richmond.

This project was designed to help young children connect with nature through exploration, creativity, and play inspired by the James River itself. Our team at Truetimber Arborists worked alongside Friends of the James River Park and Marvel to locally source, mill, and build the natural wood elements used throughout the space.

From processing trees at our South Richmond sawmill to staging massive timber pieces for installation on Belle Isle, this project reflects something we care deeply about: creating meaningful outdoor spaces with sustainability, craftsmanship, and community in mind.

If you visit Belle Isle this season, make sure to stop by the new area near the suspension bridge entrance.

We hear this a lot this time of year: “Does this tree need to come down?”

Not always.

Often it’s:
• Deadwood cleanup
• Clearance from the house
• Reducing stress on the tree
