Happy Monday, y'all! You've probably noticed we've been a bit quiet around here, and our September social media break bled into the better part of October. It felt great!

Fiddlehead has been going through a bit of a metamorphosis. Fiddlehead the business and Fiddlehead the farm are individuating. This Instagram will now be dedicated solely to (new name alert) *Fiddlehead Holistic Horticultural Services*, where I, Allie, offer garden design, installation, and maintenance services specializing in native plants, wildlife and pollinator support, food forests and edible landscaping. You can follow for farm updates!

Goofy greenhouse selfie and updated spring plant sale list in case you missed the story update. May 1st is our goal sale date! We will probably do pre-order a week or two out like last year.

Our process: We start our seeds using the soil blocking method in organic growing medium and leaf compost, and fertilize a couple times using Grow Big liquid fert. Seeds are sourced from , friends and family who gift us seed, and seed we save ourselves when we are able. Lastly, we up-pot the seedlings to 4" plastic pots before selling them to you, the customer! We've considered using biodegradable pots but they fall apart easily, and can hold onto moisture for too long making the seedlings more susceptible to various fatal fungi. We garbage dive to cut down on plastic, but still need to purchase pots to compensate for what we can't collect. So to lessen our input plastic-wise, if you return your plastic pots to us after planting, you'll receive 10% off your next plant sale purchase, either this fall when we do our perennial herbs sale, or next spring!

We've had a couple people ask if we're doing our annual plant sale this year and the answer is: yes!

The past couple weekends we've been working on getting our new-to-us little greenhouse/germination chamber built and the brick floor layed. There's still a few weekends left of work on this but we're getting there! Thank you for gifting us this incredible treasure!

After that, we'll be working on getting our high tunnel set up, where the baby plants will go once they are big enough and ready to acclimate to the outside world. This is where the funds from our fire cider and plant sales go! Directly to farm improvements and food forest to-dos so we can make this land the best educational space we can. The pandemic has thrown a wrench in our class and workshop plans, but the upside is we can focus more of our energy toward these types of tasks that will make gatherings more exciting and fulfilling down the road.

Expect to see plants available by May 1st. Last year we began selling earlier and experienced a late spring frost, which wiped out all of our personal tomatoes and peppers we had already put in the ground. Since the weather is wacky and usually unpredictable we're hoping to avoid this this upcoming year by just waiting (ugh, waiting!) a bit longer. Patience is a virtue, they say. 🙃 One of the biggest lessons this land has taught us so far! As usual, we will be growing summer vegetable starts, herb starts, and medicinal plant starts.

Rainy day dye experiments with ! We dyed with indigo and marigolds we grew on the farm this summer, on various fibers: wool, cotton, linen/cotton blend, and silk. No mordant was used for the indigo, and we did the ice/blender method on wool and cotton, salt rub method on silk. For the marigolds we used alum (aluminum) mordant. We achieved some very pretty sea foams/light blues. I'm thinking harvesting the indigo earlier in the season before it's in full flower will yield deeper aqua blues. Here's to hoping it's safe to have another botanical dye workshop on the farm with Alex next year!
