Enjoying the bits and pieces of rain we are lucky enough to get. Hope everyone is keeping cool as well.

Looking at the weather reports, it should cool down a bit this next week. These sizzling temps aren't much fun for outdoor projects.

The hot and dry weather takes a toll on everthing it seems. Save yourself some time and worry and put out a sprinkler or soaker hose on your establishing lawn or landscape. Set up a routine by kicking it on in the morning while you are getting ready for work, and don't forget to shut it off when you leave. It certainly will pay dividends when your plants make it to fall and are thriving.

Excellent read Fred Kantzer. The N that could be lost to decomposition is certainly outweighed by the financial savings.

Do landscape plants provide more than just beautiful views? I think they sure do. Providing more than just blooms and fall color; Serviceberries also have edible fruit.

I have a couple Lamarckii Serviceberry shrubs and their fruit is ripe for the picking! Having a taste similar to a tart plum or cherry; these fruits are another feature of this useful native plant.

Similar to the size of a small blueberry, you can snack on them when walking through the landscape, or collect them for use in breads and preserves. Note that they have some small seeds as raspberries do.

Using a couple little helpers, we spent about a hour picking this evening. We collected enough to make good use of them and had some fun too. This is just another way to include plantings in your landscape that provide more than just curb appeal. They may just add some appeal at the table as well.

Got a few sprinkles in the Richwood Area today, but not enough to keep things healthy. Remember even though the temps have came down, the winds will suck the moisture out new plantings. Lawns and landscapes need a good inch of water a week to stay looking good and to remain strong throughout the summer heat.

Hopefully everyone is having a great spring season. With graduations underway and the dry weather allowing the farming community to finish planting; we all have a busy summer ahead.
