While working Between bathroom remodels, our team was able to fit in a complete remodel of an old outdated basement. We removed old paneling, discovered termite damage !(repaired!!) , seal the old block walls , cleaned out the French drain, restudded walls as needed, installed mold resistant drywall throughout, 5.25trim and 3.25 inch casement installed , custom shelves, S&W paint , fresh carpet , and happy customers who’s young children have a great play area now as well as storage and office for working from home !

As we spend time with loved ones this Christmas season, take time to reflect on God sending His son to be born on earth, living a perfect life, hanging on a cross for our sins, and raising from the dead 3 days later!

We have now done several "unfinish my basement" projects, and this one stands out to me as it was a childhood friend's parents' basement. I had spent many afternoons playing in this basement! As you go through seasons of life, the needs of your home change, and this was the time to redo. With this project, we completely demoed an existing finished basement (we filled a 40-yard dumpster!). With the drywall and studs removed, we discovered a large crack in the foundation. Fortunately, the homeowners were able to get it repaired a few weeks after we demoed. We then came back to seal the block walls and used a professional-grade Sherwin-Williams concrete floor epoxy. We removed the old lighting throughout and replaced it with efficient, bright LED lights. We finished up by cleaning and repairing the insulation.

We successfully completed a unique home project in September, transforming two bathrooms into stunning retreats. Both bathrooms presented distinct challenges, which we addressed with innovative solutions. In one bathroom, we designed a custom vanity, utilizing a former bump-out space for the basement step. The homeowners, passionate about horses and dedicated to their equestrian livelihood, discovered an incredible wall mural that perfectly complemented the granite top of our custom-built vanity. A serene six-foot whirlpool, surrounded by exquisite Lucanna marble walls, completed the hall bath. In the master bath, we extended the space to seamlessly connect with the master closet, creating a harmonious flow from bedroom to bathroom. We installed a sleek 72-inch vanity, Kohler recessed medicine cabinets, a Kohler 60-inch shower pan, and Swanstone engineered marble walls, finished with a sophisticated brushed nickel shower door.
The homeowners love the finished product and we do too!

The last 4 months or so have been hectic to say the least ! Between remodels , restoring a house with our other business, and LOTS of baseball !
I had a goal of posting photos after some of our jobs but time slips away!

Although we have finished basements when restoring and selling homes throughout the years, this was the first large-scale basement finish we have done under McDowell Repair & Makeovers.
We took a completely unfinished area of almost 1,000 sq. feet and transformed it into an apartment-type living area.
The process started in November with permits and a review of plans. We got county approval right at Christmas and hit the ground running the first full week of January. We were able to stay on track throughout the entire project and wrapped up last week!
Much of the framing and finish work was completed by Bruce and me; however, a project of this size cannot come together without great help from subs such as McDowell Plumbing & Heating, Mike Harkins Electric, Outfield Painting, Long Creek HVAC, and others. Thanks!

As some of you know, I left my position at Element US Space and Defense in November 2024 to pursue a goal of owning and running my own business.
Repairing , restoring and remodeling homes has been part of life for me for the better part of 20 years. Starting with our families first home in 2006 that required a complete rebuild and growing from there. From there I started helping friends and families with home projects, then in 2016 we sold our first home and brought another “fixer upper “. After a complete restoration of it we moved in February of 2018. Later that year, I partnered up with a close friend to start restoring homes on the side and we are still restoring homes today .

Those experiences, amongst others, have contributed to starting my own remodeling company: McDowell Repair & Makeovers.

Mcdowell Repair & Makeovers is focused on kitchens, baths, finishing basements, and decks, and additions. While projects like those are our focus, we are also doing all those “handy man” repairs for your home as well!
Repairing screen doors , installing windows, fixing old drafty doors, replacing interior/exterior doors, or knocking out that “honey do list “ are just some of the handy man services we provide.
