🚨Lights Out Alert! 🚨 Tonight, an estimated 17.6 million birds will fly over Wisconsin!

We’re urging everyone to turn off or dim non-essential outdoor lights and close window shades from 11 p.m.–6 a.m. to help birds safely on their journey.

Most birds migrate at night, and light pollution can disorient them, leading to deadly window collisions. In addition to turning down the lights, you can also help by treating windows. If you’re looking for a quick fix, draw lines on your windows (no more than 2” apart) with a bar of soap or washable window markers.

A few simple steps can save countless birds, conserve energy, and protect our night skies. 🌌🐦

Want migration alerts sent straight to your inbox? Sign up for Cornell Lab of Ornithology BirdCast alerts through the link in the comments. BirdCast added 4 Wisconsin cities this year: Appleton, La Crosse, Madison, and Milwaukee. If you don’t live near one, choose the closest city to you.

BirdCast sends alerts only on the biggest migration nights; about 8–10 nights each season that account for roughly half of all migration traffic.

It's messy and a bit chaotic right now, but it's official. Fox & Dove Flower Company has moved to an official farm location! Right now it's 17 acres of last year's corn stalks, but soon enough it will be 15 acres of native grasses and perennials and 2 acres of a cut flower farm.

I look forward to seeing you later this summer on the farm!

Five caterpillars most gardeners remove on sight. Every one becomes a butterfly or moth worth more alive than the leaf it's eating.

The same organism appears in two books — beauty and pest — and most gardeners never make the connection.

- Tomato hornworm — becomes the five-lined sphinx moth, a hummingbird-sized pollinator that works the night shift. If it's covered in tiny white cocoons, leave it — those are parasitic wasps that handle next year's population for you
- Parsley worm — the green-black-yellow caterpillar on your dill and fennel is a black swallowtail. One parsley plant yields five to eight adult butterflies. The parsley costs two dollars
- Eastern tent caterpillar — the silk web tents in cherry and apple trees feed over 60 species of songbirds during the exact window when they're raising nestlings
- Gulf fritillary — bright orange with spines that look dangerous but are soft and harmless. Strips passionflower vine to bare stems. The vine regrows in a week
- Woolly bear — the fuzzy one crossing roads in October. Eats weeds. Threatens nothing you planted. Survives winter by freezing solid

The garden that protects the larva gets the butterfly. The one that removes it gets neither.

Remember there is no planet B. 😉

Also, keep an eye on Fox & Dove. We have some very exciting news to share next week!!

Appreciate all of you.

I am in love with the planet. The mysteries of the flora and the fauna will forever intrigue me. I am fascinated equally by the creatures deep in the sea to our feathered friends high in the sky and everything in between. I’m sure it all started with Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom and The Unders...

The Bushmen of the Kalahari speak of two kinds of hunger.

The Little Hunger is the hunger for food. The need for something in your belly — a fire in your body that must be fed to stay alive.

But then there’s the Great Hunger.

The hunger for meaning.
The hunger that lives deeper than the stomach — in the chest, in the bones, in the silence behind your eyes.
It’s the ache to belong. To matter. To know why you are here.

Laurens van der Post, the man pictured here, spent years among the Bushmen, listening. Learning. Trying to understand what we’ve forgotten in the modern world.

He said the most dangerous thing in life isn’t sadness. It’s emptiness — the slow, bitter erosion that comes from living without meaning.

We chase money. Status. Comfort.
We chase happiness like it’s the point.
But happiness is fleeting.
Meaning is enduring.

Because once you’re doing something that matters — really matters to your soul — it doesn’t matter whether you feel good all the time.

You feel right.
You feel connected.
You feel like you belong to something bigger than you.

And in that belonging, even the hardships become sacred.

This photo isn’t just a meeting between two men.
It’s a quiet moment between two ways of being.
One remembers that we are not just bodies to be fed, but spirits to be fulfilled.

And maybe that’s the real hunger we’ve been trying to feed all along.
