Over the past few years, I’ve had the pleasure of supporting so many amazing artists in our city! Building community is such an important part of public art, and I can honestly say I’ve learned so much from each of these projects I’ve been a part of. Shout out to all of these amazing artists!

Big thanks to Art in Roanoke and their many partnerships to make these projects a reality. This residency has been a real highlight of my time in public art so far 👏

1. I had the honor of pairing Bryce Cobbs and JC Stallings together to bring their vibrant mural to the YMCA Express at Gainsboro over the past year. What a project!

2. Supporting muralist Nicole Gray and mosaic artist Steven Paul in SE Roanoke was such a cool collaboration and new aesthetic for that neighborhood.

3. Working with community on the greenways during my “Lady of the River” mural was a highlight of last year. Nothing beats painting together.

4. We brought color and motion to the West End Center For Youth, Inc. last year. Shout out to the crazy talented Rachel Anne Morris for the amazing mural here!

5. Helping bring Christina Wingchow to Roanoke last month was something I’m so proud of. She’s such an amazing artist and brought new life and a new style to our downtown murals. Love it 👊

Whether it’s on the greenways with or the many walls graced with color this past year… I am so honored to be a part of Roanoke’s growing mural journey! Hands up to for starting something special 🙌

Yes, I was an oil painter first! “Cammo-Man” shows my no brush process from the past (only palette knives). Now as a muralist I’m going to dive back into my roots in painting the working class of SWVA. Excited to be inspired by my past and renew my vision for representing the some of the coolest people I know….but this time much much larger!

Look for a few more example of my previous “Working Class” series to come at you soon 🤙

Always working to refine the mural-making process, but here's what it looks like for me right now...

1️⃣ R&R: Before starting a new project, I take some chill time to hike and get inspired by the Blue Ridge ⛰

2️⃣ Constantly tweaking concepts on my iPad and in my sketchbooks ✏

3️⃣ I like to support local artists by helping arrange projects for other muralists to paint in Roanoke.

4️⃣ You'll catch me scoping out new walls for future murals - the one pictured now hosts my painting "The Swing."

5️⃣ Tavel ✈ I photographed this public artwork in Brazil 🇧🇷

6️⃣ Gotta have Montana Cans (official)!

7️⃣ I try to remember that celebrating art is just as important as creating it... especially when you're celebrating with the models who offer inspiration for your project 📸

8️⃣ Mix paint... So. Much. Paint. 🙃

9️⃣ Can't function without coffee ☕😅

Hi, I’m Jon — full time Appalachian muralist and storyteller based in Roanoke, VA. I hold an MFA from Radford University with a focus in painting and drawing, but my true inspiration comes from the people of Appalachia — their stories, their character, their spirit...

After several years spent teaching art courses, I made the transition to painting large scale murals full-time. You can find my work all over Virginia and beyond - even as far away as Brazil 🌴 Thanks for following along here and being a part of my journey!
