Before and after at my dear friend Jessica Campbell house in Gallipolis, Ohio. Her and her husband Caleb have a gorgeous farm house sitting right off the Ohio river!! Pumpkins, corn, and tomatoes in abundance on their property. Oh and the tall Pecan trees providing privacy and shade to the front of their house makes it feel very welcoming and comfortable. For the last 4 years they have grown a family along with their crops. The beds in front of the house didn’t get as much attention. Jessica is expecting her second child in the next few short weeks so we wanted to come out and rejuvenate her front flower beds so she can enjoy them going into fall as they welcome a new life into this world.

I wanted to bring a more modern/farm style design to go with the feng shui of the house. We repurposed the paver edging and made a wall around their metal fire pit. Weeded out both beds and then installed a commercial grade fabric and low profile black edging to hold the mulch in place and give a sharp look around the edge of the beds.

We wanted to add some flowering perennials for added color to clash with the white of the house and the black mulch. Also wanted some easy maintenance evergreen shrubs and grasses that look nice and add a more modern tone to the farm house. They had some awesome old plowing equipment that was here when they bought the farm. We added the horse scoop and the horse drawn plow to the front of the house to go along with the modern farm life theme.

This project turned out great and I’m happy to have been able to transform the front of Jessica and Caleb’s beautiful modern farmhouse. Soon they will have another child running around admiring the flowers and running in the mulch! 😊🌸🌺🌻🐄🐓🐑

Little before and after project we did last week on my birthday for Lauren Samples. She wanted a simple low maintenance, modern, update for the front of her home. We first took out all the old rotten landscaping Timbers and w**ds and old deteriorated fabric. We then pinned down new commercial grade w**d barrier and installed a low profile black edging to hold all the rock in the beds. We chose white marble rock for this job. The evergreen shrubs we planted really stood out with the white rock. Definitely the easiest material to use that requires pretty much zero maintenance year after year. Lastly we placed 6 solar powered disks to highlight the beauty of the new beds at night.

I’m glad we were able to design and implement Lauren’s modern vision for the front of her house!!

McGraws house before and after

I was referred to the McGraws by one of my clients, whose home I service on a monthly basis. Upon arrival I was in awe of how beautiful their home is and began to visualize how and what I was going to do to add and enhance the natural beauty around their home.

A couple of areas in the front left of the home and going down the left side of the house towards the back there was some serious erosion from heavy rainwater
run-off. I knew we needed to tackle that by laying down our commercial grade fabric to hold the soil in place. Up on the plateau where Fayetteville sits the soil composition is mainly clay and sandstone rock. So water doesn’t drain very well, instead it runs overtop of the soil washing it and their old mulch away. Another way we were going to combat that problem was once the new fabric and mulch were in place we would use this specialized glue designed solely to hold mulch and gravel in place on hillsides and areas with heavy erosion. The glue was tested last week when we had that heavy downpour in a few short hours. The next day I returned to finish the back side and saw that none of the mulch that would have previously been washed to the bottom of the hill, was still in the areas that have heavy water runoff (in the spring we will install a drainage system to help divert some of that water from running down the left side of the house).

The back of the house had a steep 10 foot slope that ran the length of the house. It made it very difficult for Mr. McGraw to w**d eat and they wanted to get ride of it and make the area maintenance free. Best way to do that is again to lay down our commercial grade fabric and mulch the hillside. Again we used the mulch glue to hold everything in place and it has proven to hold up under heavy rainfall like the left side of the house did. Mrs. McGraw wanted some type of stone or paver to act as a border between the mulch hillside and their wildflower pasture they have planted in the remaining part of their back yard. I went to a stone yard in Charleston and found gorgeous cut sandstone rock that was once used in an old coal mine here in Fayette county. The rock was used as cribbing to hold certain sections of the ceiling to the mine from collapsing. With the natural landscape of their property I thought the sandstone would be a great addition and it sure does look great with the black mulch and the color of their home.

Lastly we translated a bunch of native ferns in the front of the house creating a half moon shaped mulch bed to enclose the area.

This is by far the best looking landscape design and home I have worked in yet. I am so thankful for the McGraws in allowing my vision to come to life providing a little more beauty to their already spectacular home.

Starting next season we will be offering custom bouquets of our gorgeous Dahlias that we grow each year!! These pie pan dahlias we call them are massive. You will definitely have to tie them up if you would rather have your own bulbs to grow. Great thing about Dahlias, like a potato they grow more bulbs year after year. Eventually, like us you’ll have multiple five gallon buckets filled with bulbs to plant. Simply dig them back up before winter and keep them in peat moss until early May then they are ready to go back into the ground.

Melissa Myers Richards beautiful, modern, low maintenance landscaping project. We will be finishing up in the coming days after they add some stone work around the front door and side of the garage and foundation. I love how we cut the winding bed along the front of the house. No one likes to have their mulch run into the yard. We cut the edge along the entire bed down about 3-4 inches. I can’t wait to see her Crimson Queen Japanese Maple Mature and highlight the front of the house! Stay tuned for more picks here in the next few weeks.

Mr. & Mrs. Reese project before and after.

Patti, like myself, is a strong visual spatial leaner. She could see what her hillside could potentially look like and called us to come execute. After speaking on the phone and doing a site visit, (she made the best sausage and tomatoe pie I’ve ever had) I developed a plan to transform her hillside into a three tierd terrace landscape. We removed about 4-6 tons of top soil and repurposed them at low spots in the yard. Then as we cut the tiers into the hillside we strengthened the steps by securing plywood to hold the dirt in place. The stone masons are now building beautiful stone walls along each tier section to match the rest of the stone work. This was a fun project, I didn’t realize how beautiful bluefield was until I got here and drove around some. What a rich tradition they have and some of the houses were breathtakingly beautiful!! Hope to do more business here in the area. We will be back in a few days to plant each tier and really showcase this properties beauty. Can’t wait to see how the stone work turns out.

Jenna Gale and Dr. Mark Coomes house. Their neighborhood is called pine hills, so I thought it would be fitting that we clean up along their pine trees in the back yard and make it a nice long edged bed. We started out by clearing all the dead branches and w**ds away, then edged along the bed to give it a sharp border. Then of course we laid down our commercial grade w**d fabric. I figured that mulch would look great. The dark color clashing with the green needles, but I also thought about when those trees start to drop their needles and completely cover up the mulch.

So we decided to call down to Atlanta Georgia and I got ahold of the owner of Pine Straw USA and asked him to ship me up some 14inch long leaf pine needle.
When I lived in Florida for a few years I noticed that most flower beds were mulched with pine straw. It’s a natural ground cover that will eventually break down and provide nutrients back into the soil. Plus when the trees start to shake their needles off you won’t be able to tell the difference, oh and the dogs loved it!! Penny, Cooper, and big boy Moose were all laying in it once we had it spread out. One of the largest single beds I’ve done, 4,700 sq ft is what it took to cover the entire length with a 2-4 inch depth.

I wanted to bring in some bigger rocks and place them every 15-20 ft along the edge of the bed. Called some clients at one of our bigger coal companies and asked if I could come on site and pick some rocks out. Gray sandstone really sticks out amongst the trees and pine straw. I love the look of them.

Next was the thorn bush and maiden grass island, it needed some fabric and a proper haircut and a few more rocks to go around the front edge. It looks very sharp now.

Onto the front of the house. Their previous comapny had stacked river rock along the bank of the front sidewalk, it looked okay but was kinda just thrown together quickly without care for how the rocks were stacked. So I removed them all, laid fabric up along the bank to keep w**ds from growing in between the stones and like a game of Tetris I carefully re-stacked all of the rocks back in a more geometrical aesthetically pleasing way.

All the beds in the front had no fabric so we w**ded them and laid down our w**d barrier. Then we hand pulled every w**d between each stone in the sidewalk. Brought in 8 yards of brown mulch and prettied up the front of their gorgeous house again.

I couldn’t be happier with our work these past two weeks and I thank everyone who helped me finish this. Mark and Jenna I thank you both and hope you enjoy your refreshed landscaping!!

Normally a little rain doesn’t bother me, but when you add severe thunder and lightning plus you’re under a very conductive pine tree, I stayed out in it until it got a little too close for comfort. Only have about 25 feet left to spread the remaining bales of pine straw. My four legged companion Penny liked the new bedding area I created for her and her two brothers. This is a beautiful addition to Dr. Mark and Jenna Gale’s already stunning home!
Tomorrow I’ll finish up the bottom pine straw bed and then turn my attention to the front of the house! Stay tuned…
