Today is the last day of our sale on 'big' trees -- 10 gallon pots and larger.
Why plant native trees?

Now is a great time to add fall color!
Here in white and pink is Swamp Rose Mallow, a tall plant with giant blooms on a sturdy stem. Swamp Rose Mallow gets up to 7’ tall and adds a tropical feel to the garden. It likes sunny, moist sites.
The blue is Blue Lobelia, also a lover of sun and moist. It makes a great vertical contrast to Swamp Rose, sending spikes of royal blue up to 3’ tall and attracts hummingbirds, bumblebees and other pollinators like crazy.
Last in the bunch is Early Sunflower, Heliopsis helianthoides. Almost as tall as Swamp Rose, Early Sunflower grows naturally in drier soils but adapts to more moisture.
Try all three! They compliment each other beautifully!

Why plant Gray Dogwood (pictured) vs Red Twig Dogwood?
Both are beautiful shrubs, both are great nectar and pollen sources, both provide white fall berries for the birds, and both, like all dogwoods, have outstanding fall color.
Red Twig is sought after for its bright red twigs,which look great in the snow, against a white foundation and even against an evergreen backdrop.
Not to be outdone, Gray has lovely red markings on its twigs, and it has beautiful, full branching.
Where red twig can be a bit twiggy in winter—especially when the old twigs are pruned off letting the red, young twigs take the stage, Gray is a round shrub with lovely, intricate branching and narrower leaves.
Gray Dogwood generally grows 3-8’ high and wide, and it can grow to 25 feet if pruned as a tree.
It likes sun to dappled shade and, while it prefers moist soils, it is remarkably adaptable to dry.
Also fun fact, it’s red pedicles remain ornamental even after the birds have eaten all the berries.

Yes there are birds flying around out there, but not nearly as many as there were when we were kids. Habitat loss is one of the primary reasons we’ve lost about 3 billion birds just in the past few decades.
You can put out a feeder, and adult birds will feed on the seeds. But seeds are only about 20% of an adult birds diet, and 0% of their babies’.
Birds need caterpillars and other bugs to feed their young—and themselves.
Where do they get these caterpillars?
Native trees, especially River Birch.
River Birch is considered a keystone plant because it feeds more caterpillars than any other tree except the native Oaks and Cherries.
River Birch also has exfoliating bark, which gives birds a place to dig around for other insects even during the winter months.
It also happens to be a beautiful tree for the yard, with an arching canopy and lovely foliage and topping out around 50 to 60 feet.
And now, through Labor Day, our river birch and all our trees in 10-gallon containers and larger, are 30% off.

Purple-flowering Raspberry, Rubus odoratus, is a native bush filled with large, green, floor-to-ceiling foliage, pink rose blooms and tasty raspberries.
Bonus: it’s thornless—AND it attracts tons of pollinators!
Butterflies and songbirds love this bush.
It’s a wide one: 3-6’ tall and 6-12’ wide.
Try it as a specimen or hedge—basically any sunny spot where you can snack on the raspberries.
