That gap behind the siding is not wasted space.

A rainscreen gap gives water a path to drain and allows airflow behind the siding. In Western Washington, that matters because walls need a way to dry after rain, wind, and moisture exposure.

Small detail. Better water management.

This balcony floor looked fine from above… until we started peeling it apart.

Under the tile flooring, the only thing protecting the sheeting was house wrap and cement board. Tile is not a waterproofing system by itself, so water had been getting through and rotting the balcony floor underneath. By the time we opened it up, the sheeting was gone and even the supporting beam had to be replaced.

This is why exterior balconies, decks, and covered areas need the right waterproofing details — not just materials stacked together and covered up.

Thanks for watching — follow Armor Exteriors for more real-world exterior remodels, rot repairs, siding, roofing, decks, and moisture-damage fixes in the Pacific Northwest.

Too close to the roof = trouble.

When siding sits too tight to shingles, it gets more exposure to runoff, splashback, and trapped debris. That means more moisture and faster deterioration over time.

For Hardie siding, this is one of those small details that matters: the recommended clearance above roofing is about 2 inches.

Small detail. Big difference.

Look what was hidden in this balcony floor! A massive water pocket was festering and rotting this poorly built balcony floor away.

You know how some people like watching pimple popping videos (no, of course not you or me), well this is a contractor equivalent.

This pencil sharpener got one chance… and completely failed. After it kept breaking the point and turning the pencil into a wooden nub, it was time to do it the old-school way with a knife. Sometimes the simple tool is still the best tool.

Matte finish on standing seam metal roofing is mostly about the look.

It gives dark roof colors like charcoal a softer, lower-glare appearance while keeping the clean lines people like about metal roofing. It can also help make minor visual waviness less noticeable compared to a glossier finish.

Good material choice. Clean roof lines. Better curb appeal.

Snapping a chalk line so the ridge cap stays straight from one end of the roof to the other.

Simple tool. Big difference.

Installing a standing seam metal panel.

Each panel has to be carefully aligned and locked into the previous one to create a clean, weather-tight roof built to handle years of Pacific Northwest weather.

Small details. Big difference.

This protective film stays on the metal trim until it’s ready to be installed. It helps prevent scratches, scuffs, and handling damage so the finished roof looks as good on day one as it did leaving the factory.
