Pop quiz: Do you know what any refrigeration system's worst enemy is?

We use dry nitrogen, strict procedures, and the tools below to fight it. This is our evacuation kit. A vacuum pump AND a good micron gauge are absolutely essential tools (probably the most important) to do this job correctly. There are all sorts of set-ups out there that work just fine, this happens to be ours. It does the job quickly and provides the verification we need.

Many people think that the vacuum pump is to pull air out of the lines, and they're not wrong. However, that air contains the mystery assailant, moisture! The reaction of modern hydroscopic oils and refrigerants with the water can form acid inside your system and burn your compressor out faster than you can say "At least I saved $$$ on the install!"

The evacuation (even with our super effective set-up) can take up to several hours. It's one of the most frustrating things to just have to wait for that process to work itself out. Holding below 500 microns is the goal! If it doesn't, there's a leak or moisture present. I don't know about you but I like to eliminate future headaches whenever I can. That extra hour is waaaaay cheaper than a new compressor!

You're not buying an appliance; you're buying the installation.

This is the current big kahuna of leak detectors on the market. If leak detectors were cars, this is a big block '69 Mach 1 Mustang.

A good leak detector (backed by nitrogen, soap bubbles, and good refrigeration practices) are essential tools of true HVAC service companies.

If you don't have these, you're not welcome on our race track. Go find a go-cart course and stay in your lane.

Kinda disappointed she'd rather be a nurse than follow in her uncle's footsteps! I'm trying to get over it. Truth be told, the HVAC lifestyle isn't all glitz and glamor like Hollywood portrays it to be.

True story: An older gentleman beat on my front door at 8:00 am one Sunday morning a few years back. It was a ground source heat pump that needed water added to the ground loops and a splash of refrigerant every year. Every. Year. Sunday morning, 8:00 am...

Anyway, congrats to our graduates! Actively pursue the life that you think you want with everything you've got! It's okay if it takes longer than others or you end up taking a different path than intended. Get out there and get it! Also, don't bother people at 8:00 am on a Sunday and expect a pleasant response.

Rare thing occurring Sunday, May 17, 2026. We are fully closed for the day. You'll have to wait till next week. A family member is graduating high school! This requires the boss man's support for one of his favorite nieces! She's also the only applicant, and thusly the only recipient of our annual scholarship for tradespeople. She's the 5th to receive it. Spread the word that it's out there!

Also, I need to bother my sister in ways only a good brother can.

Hard to beat an attic on a warm Saturday morning!... said no one, ever.

I'd like to be on my couch contemplating what things I could be accomplishing or not accomplishing at my own house. Alas, it was not meant to be. I have good, loyal customers that I've made promises to and I'm going to follow through! Also have a few that have called in last night or already this morning that will be getting taken care of. I'm their guy. No calling around to see who will get there first or who is cheaper. Just a known, trusted relationship.

Local people doing business locally is the only thing that keeps small towns alive. Spread the word to those that need to hear it.

This set of Fieldpiece probes is about as handy as a shirt pocket!

We can measure refrigerant pressures, refrigerant temperatures, return & supply air temperatures, return & supply air humidity, total static pressure in the duct, and actual total system capacity; simultaneously and in real time! These probes connect via Bluetooth to a tablet and can monitor what the ENTIRE system is up to in an instant. Unbelievably handy!

We use these for some service calls but mainly they're for commissioning new equipment. We can dial it in perfectly with this set up to help ensure you get many years of quiet, efficient comfort!

I'm not joking at all when I say we do a far better and more thorough job. Every detail, every time.

This mess of hoses and wires is a dual port digital manometer. It's measures in inches of water column; which is basically a fractional PSI measurement.

We use manometers for several things like checking out the pressure switches, as well as diagnosing airflow issues inside your furnace's heat exchanger and flue system. We also use it to set the gas pressure in and out of your furnace's gas valve; a crucial step in properly commissioning a furnace. Guess whose installs we have to fix that on frequently...

Finally, we use it to measure total static pressure within a duct system. Why is this important? Modern day ECM blower motors are not the same as the old belt drive or PSC motors. They are more efficient and have on board electronics. Too high of static pressure and that expensive motor will burn out far ahead of schedule. From that aspect alone, it's worth the effort. That very noticeable blower noise is a symptom. Leaving the blower speed to the factory 'High' (like a certain company always does) will cost you. You can't push 1400 cfm of air through 800 cfm duct and not expect problems down the road.

The all mighty Fieldpiece digital manifold gauges! Our window into what the refrigerant inside your system is up to.

These digital gauges give a lot of vital information (though not the whole picture) at a glance. We used to have to squint at a needle on the gauge, clamp on our temperature probe, break out our paper temperature/pressure chart, find the corresponding numbers, and then do math. And then repeat the process for the other gauge, only to find out the original gauge is now at a different pressure. Frustrating! These babies spit out the system superheat and subcooling simultaneously and in real time!

Back in the old R-22 days (damn I've been at this a long time) we used "Beer can cold" as the rule of thumb. That refrigerant has now been twice succeeded by newer, far more finicky refrigerants. Those simple days are gone.

Tools of the trade! The tools we need to do to things we need to do! We'll start with the simple ones you've likely seen before.

This is the tool bag I carry into service calls. It's full of various familiar hand tools, a meter, some temperature probes, a drain blow out gun, and lots of little things in the pouches. Nearly 18 # worth of tools! Any guess how much $$$ I'm carrying into your house just in this pouch?

You're going to learn about more unfamiliar tools and why they're important in upcoming posts. Stay tuned for an education!

Got to see this 5 year old install this morning. Still looking just as good as the day I commissioned it!

Some of you eagle eyed viewers might have already spotted it. This one is hooked to a remote wood boiler. You'll notice the weird shape in the plenum with pex lines and the extra electrical thingy hanging off the side of the furnace.

It's important to get it right from the beginning. I fully plan to service my installs for the lifetime of the equipment and I REALLY don't want to cause my future self any extra headaches.
