Eleventh Hour Rescue joins the rest of the rescue world in mourning the devastating loss of Chris Arsenault, founder of Happy Cat Sanctuary in Long Island, NY. A deadly fire engulfed part of the facility on Monday, claiming Chris’ life as well as the lives of at least 100 of his cats.

Chris started Happy Cat Sanctuary in 2006 to help cope with the loss of his 24-year old son in a motorcycle accident. He was a kind and selfless man who dedicated his life to the care of his cats until he gave his life attempting to save them from the deadly flames.

A mission to trap and treat escaped and injured cats is currently underway by qualified, local rescue organizations. Those in charge of the rescue efforts have kindly asked that people refrain from entering the area; not only is this fire under active investigation, increased noise and activity in the area will drive the cats they are desperately trying to recover further away from the property. They have been granted a 2-week window by the city to get this done before access to the property becomes completely prohibited and they cannot afford any impediment to their efforts as they race against time.

Several organizations have taken to social media to request supply and/or monetary donations for Happy Cat Sanctuary, and while several of them are legit, a number of scammers and fraudulent posts have been identified. In an effort to ensure all donations make it where they need to go and all updates are provided directly from the source, a Facebook group titled “Happy Cat Help” has been created. We encourage everyone interested in learning more about the situation as it unfolds, to make a donation, or learn about upcoming volunteer opportunities, to join and do so through this group.
