One of the best investments you can make in bonsai isn’t buying another tree… it’s joining your local bonsai society.

Whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been growing bonsai for years, there’s simply no substitute for learning from people who have decades of experience.

You’ll see techniques you won’t find in books or videos, get hands-on advice for your own trees, watch live demonstrations, and connect with people who share the same passion for bonsai.

Here in North Texas, we’re fortunate to have the Bonsai Society of Dallas, which meets on the first Saturday of every month at 9:00 AM at North Haven Gardens. Visitors are welcome, and every meeting is an opportunity to learn something new.

Some of the friendships we’ve made and lessons we’ve learned have come from simply showing up, asking questions, and being willing to learn.

Bonsai is an art that is meant to be shared. The more you surround yourself with knowledgeable enthusiasts, the faster you’ll grow, not just your trees, but your skills and appreciation for the craft.

Sometimes the ugliest branch on a bonsai is the most important one.

They’re called sacrifice branches.

Their job isn’t to look good, it’s to build strength.

We intentionally let these branches grow unchecked because they increase sap flow, thicken the trunk, heal large pruning scars faster, and create taper.

Once they’ve done their job…

They get removed.

It seems backwards until you understand the purpose.

Great bonsai isn’t about making every decision for today, it’s about making decisions for what the tree should become five years from now.

It’s been a little quiet around here… but not because we’ve been resting.

Well… maybe just for a few days. We took a short vacation to recharge, spend some time with family, and come back with fresh ideas and renewed energy.

Since then, we’ve been busy caring for our own trees, boarding our clients’ collections, helping customers, rebuilding our website, establishing relationships with new suppliers and wholesalers, and planning what’s next for Feral Root Bonsai.

We’ve also been expanding our inventory, sourcing new products, and laying the groundwork for some exciting things to come.

One of the things bonsai continually teaches us is that growth isn’t always obvious. The most important work often happens beneath the surface, where roots are quietly growing stronger before anyone sees the results.

That’s been true for us as well.

We’re excited to start sharing more with you again; new trees, educational content, techniques, behind-the-scenes projects, workshops, and a few surprises we’ve been working on.

DEFOLIATION IN PROGRESS!

One of the most fascinating techniques in bonsai is defoliation, the intentional removal of leaves to encourage a new flush of growth.

This Chinese Elm is currently going through that process. As you can see from the photos, it has gone from a full canopy of foliage to a bare network of branches. While it may look drastic, there is a purpose behind it.

Why defoliate a Chinese Elm?
🌳 Reduce leaf size
🌳Increase ramification (more fine branching)
🌳Improve light pe*******on throughout the tree
🌳Encourage back budding closer to the trunk and primary branches
🌳Reveal the tree’s structure so future design decisions can be made

For this particular tree, my goal is to continue building a dense canopy with finer branching and better proportions. By removing the leaves, I can clearly see the branch structure and direct the tree’s energy into producing new growth where I want it.

Chinese Elms are vigorous growers and typically respond very well to defoliation when they are healthy and actively growing. Over the next several weeks, I’ll be watching for new buds and shoots as the tree begins its next stage of development.

One of the things I love most about bonsai is that sometimes progress means making a tree look worse before it looks better. The beauty is in the process.
