At the theater with my wife. She needed a campfire with rocks. So I built some fake lightweight rocks. Step 1- cut a shape out of Styrofoam. Step 2- cover in drywall mud and let dry. (The thicker the mud, the deeper the cracks in the surface since mud shrinks as it dries.) Step 3- sand. (Less sanding for more rugged looks, more sanding for a water-worn look.) Step 4- paint. (The rock I show the entire process for here has a gray aerosol paint in various thicknesses for shaded effect. The other rocks have more intricate painting: a base coat with multiple different colors and amounts of colorwashing/scumbling.)
