I usually post something along these lines each year. Here we go!

If you are in the trades and want to learn, truly, how to build things, first, work on old homes and buildings every opportunity you get. Learn good and bad things that they did. Most of it will be good in an old home, as they're still standing if you're working on them, and that likely means it was well built.

Secondly, get a series of books called Audels Carpentry and Builders Book. There are several of them, different iterations and editions, much of them similar, but with pertinent updates here and there. You will learn things you didn't know you need to know.

Work in different trades. Learn framing, foundations, roofing, electrical, plumbing, drywall, finishing, painting. Learn how they interact, how a bad framing job translates into a hellish drywall experience.

And lastly, try things. New techniques. New skills. New materials. Utilize what you have at your disposal. Become your own master of all trades. It is still possible to do this, even in 2025.
