We are out here today! The UCCE Master Gardeners of Sacramento County are hosting their annual Harvest Day event today, Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center. We’ll be here from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This event features educational talks, workshops, plant sales, local vendors, and food trucks, with Master Gardeners available to answer gardening questions. Come by and say hi and let’s talk California Native landscaping.

Many people get concerned when they see these holes in the leaves of their plants but they should be excited! These are leaf cutter bees, using leaves as nesting material. It’s very common to see holes in Redbud trees but this year I’ve noticed the bees love the leaves of our brown twig, dogwood shrub. I provided a bee hotel for them to nest in. It’s almost full I had to get a second one!

The first year they sleep, second year they creep and the third year they leap.

This garden struggled for the first few years, but we’re on year three and everything is huge and happy!

Be patient with your native plants and gardens. They will reward you!
