Add mulch:

If you don’t already have mulch in your garden beds and around trees, lay some down before the first freeze. This layer of protection insulates plant roots against the cold and wards off soil erosion from heavy fall rain.
Water and mow one last time: Right before the weather officially turns cold, give your lawn one last watering and a good cut. Short grass in the winter is less prone to disease, which means you can expect a healthier lawn in the spring.

Get into the Thanksgiving Spirit
Plant vibrant fall flowers:

Just because the weather is turning cold doesn’t mean you must give up on beautiful blossoms just yet! Fill your porch with planters full of mums, pansies, and celosia for lovely autumn hues of orange, bronze, russet, and gold.

Set out corn stalks and hay bales:

Corn stalks are a beautiful fall décor item for flanking your front door or dressing up a tree in the yard. Surround the stalks with decorative hay bales, which create the perfect surfaces to set potted flowers, gourds, baskets of dried corn, and any pumpkins that didn’t get carved at Halloween.

Paint your front door and patio bench:

If you’ve been thinking about repainting your front door and wood patio bench, do so now with fall colors in mind. Gold, brown, burnt orange, maroon, and eggplant are autumnal hues that will look beautiful throughout the rest of the year as well.

Make Winter Preparations

Fertilize your lawn:

Crisp fall weather is perfect for fertilizing. Apply a nitrogen-only product to provide your grass with much-needed nutrients to fortify it before the winter.
We offer late-fall (and year-round) lawn maintenance as part of our full service lawn care program.

Plant trees:

Cooler air temperatures and warm soil make fall the perfect time to plant trees and shrubs. These conditions give the root systems of young plants a chance to become established for thriving growth come springtime.

It's that time of the year again!

Your home’s gutters are there for one reason — to protect your home from serious water damage. They work by channeling rain and snow away from your home’s roof and foundation. But, if your home’s gutters are not inspected and maintained properly, you can’t be sure they are really protecting your home as well as they should. Now is an excellent time to ensure that your gutters did not sustain any damage over the winter.

Clean Your Clogged Gutters

Typical problems with gutters include leaking, sagging, overflowing, pooling runoff, and clogging; however, clogging is the most common problem of all. If they are not cleaned regularly, gutters and downspouts can get so clogged with debris that they are basically useless. The excess weight of leaves, twigs, and standing water can also make gutters sag and pull away from the fascia. It’s recommended that you clean your gutters at least once per year, and twice per year if there are a lot of trees near your home. After a big storm, it is a good idea to check your gutters to ensure that they did not accumulate storm debris. If your gutters are chronically clogged, you should consider outfitting them with gutter covers.

January

Wait to prune spring blooming shrubs, such as forsythia, weigela, lilac, Spanish broom and bridal wreath, or you’ll be cutting off the flowers. Once they’ve finished blooming, then prune them back.

Do not prune wisteria vines now. Wait until two weeks after they have bloomed.

Cut ornamental grasses to the ground before new growth appears.

Nursery shelves are overflowing with summer blooming bulbs: calla, canna, dahlia, lilies, amaryllis, gladiolus, crocosmia and more.

January is bare-root season for fruit trees, berry vines, grapevines, shrubs, roses, artichoke crowns and more. Buying bare-root is less expensive than buying a plant already potted. If the soil is too wet to work, dig a trench and lay the plants in it, then lightly cover the roots with soil or compost until you can plant.

Spray fruit trees with dormant oil to kill overwintering insects (such as scale) and to control powdery mildew.

Prune fruit trees. If you don’t know how, buy a book on fruit and nut trees and take it into the garden with you and read about each type of fruit tree before you make any cuts.

Cut grapevines back, leaving two to three buds per side shoot.

Prune hybrid tea roses: Cut out spindly wood. Cut away crossing branches. Take out old canes. Don’t worry if there are flower buds. Leave the newest, strongest canes. The idea is to get plants ready for spring. Always use sharp shears, and make all cuts on a slant. Wait until spring to prune climbing roses.

Cut sedum stalks to the ground.

Cut berry vines that bore fruit last year to the ground. Clear away all debris in the berry patch and apply a new layer of mulch.

For a succession of bloom, plant gladiolus every two weeks. Plant them in clumps.

Order seeds for this year’s vegetable garden.

If you have crabgrass in your lawn, now is the best time to apply a pre-emergent.

Plant calendula, candytuft, English daisy, Iceland poppy, pansy, primrose, snapdragons sweet pea and viola.

Vegetables to plant this month: broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, parsley, peas, carrots, radishes and turnips.

Prune clematis that bloomed last summer and fall.

Sharpen blades of lawnmowers, shovels and hoes. Check pruning shears for dull blades, too.

Wait until spring to prune away frost damaged foliage or limbs. Let it look ugly. It will protect the plant and when spring comes you can see just how far back the damage is.

MODIFIED LEAF SEASON FOR 2015

The impact of the prolonged drought on Sacramento trees could mean an earlier than normal leaf drop. The City plans to modify its leaf season pickup schedule for 2015. Residential customers can legally place yard waste piles in the street for collection:

First Day Out: October 19, 2015

Last Day Out: January 31, 2016

Weekly residential yard waste container collection will continue year-round on a customer's usual collection day. Leaf pile pickup typically occurs approximately every two weeks and will usually not occur on your regular collection day.
