Hello everyone!
Welcome to our new page. Here you will find everything that’s happening at Terra going forward. And as a first post I think it’s customary to introduce myself.
My name is Jonathan Cochrane, I am a St.Augustine local who loves plants to the fullest degree. My story started when I was little always wanting a fruit tree in my family’s backyard . When we moved to Florida from the northeast , I tried to figure out what fruit tree I wanted and as many people do, I ended up with a Myers lemon tree.
One day I saw a video online talking about using the top of a pineapple to grow another pineapple plant. Needless to say friends and family had their doubts. And one even said “you’ll never get that thing to grow a pineapple”. Well, after 3 years of babysitting that plant, I finally got a huge fruit and that experience sparked a passion for growing every kind of fruit tree I could get my hands on. Everyday I researched rare plants and ways I could grow them in my area. After a while I started selling fruit trees out of my backyard on the weekends and driving semi trucks during the week. I made tons of posts on Facebook marketplace and used all the money I had to buy more plants either online or at nurseries I came across in my travels as a truck driver. Probably not the smartest decision to risk every extra dollar I had on fruit trees and rare houseplants but it worked out for the best. I have amassed a large collection of rare houseplants and exotic fruit trees over the years, and im so excited to share my passion with the community.
My collection along with some donations made by the community will soon be on display in the exhibits and scattered around at Terra for the communities enjoyment.
It all started with a pineapple plant and because of that, you will see a pineapple weathervane on top of the main building at Terra to remind me and everyone else that it only takes 1 small idea to change your life and to not listen when someone doubts you.
Terra Nurseries is a new nursery concept I’ve dreamt about for many years. It is a nursery focused on the community, a place for families to gather, relax and learn. It’s not your typical nursery and I’m so excited to share this concept with everyone. Terra is a place you can grab an iced coffee from under the pavilion and walk around the pond enjoying nature. You can also sit in the courtyard and take a morning meeting using our free WiFi. Or stock up on a couple of our thousands of plants to choose from. We want everyone in the community to feel welcomed and not rushed to purchase. It’s more than a store, it’s a second home.
