This is a story about a tragedy with a happy ending.

It was just before 8 p.m. last night when one of our deputies was driving to work and saw smoke billowing from a building near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and Victoria Street.

Someone’s home was burning.

He called it in: A triplex on the 3500 block of Chatsworth Circle in Shoreview was on fire. A 23-year-old woman with autism was still inside, according to her grandfather.

Together, the grandfather and the deputy ran into the burning townhouse to find her. She was in an upstairs bedroom and frightened. The deputy whisked her down the stairs and out the front door to safety.

As the Lake Johanna Fire Department worked to douse the flames, other deputies went door-to-door, warning neighbors.

A family tragically lost its home home last night.

But they still have each other.

And for that, our hearts are filled with happiness.
